yes this was fantastic. I think he liked one cut of the dead
I really loved Knightriders. It really hits as a summer movie, with bright green bolsterous east coast foliage seen out the windows of caravanning vehicles on their way or stopping by here or there where people get out to swim or picnic. There are inscrutable internal dynamics to the group and to some individuals that tell of a historied past, which is never fully revealed. Legends in time, moving around a central dilemma not worked out until the end where a new king is crowned and someone finally finds the death theyâve been out here searching for.
Stunts. Brother Blue. Tom Savini and Ed Harris. Itâs so good.
One of the sweetest movies ever
That ending scene where ed harris beats the shit out of a cop and everyone cheers
In Bruges and The Banshees of Inisherin
It was interesting to see the same director and actors tackle two very different movies.
In Bruges has a lot of funny lines in it. I enjoyed it a lot while watching it.
The Banshees of Inisherin is a little more serious, and I didnât enjoy it as much moment to moment, but the themes resonated a little more when it was over.
Both feel like travel porn; one for Bruges, and one for rural Ireland.
Ne Zha 2 is pretty good. The animation is miles ahead of the first movie. While the first one was a pretty simple kids comedy full of fart and pee jokes, this one is a 2 and a half hour epic action film full of fart and pee jokes.
I kinda liked the tonal whiplash of some of it, itâs not afraid to get really grim and serious, but then youâll have a slapstick routine play out right in the middle of a serious action piece.
Also itâs got all the usual stoic and respectable characters youâd expect from Chinese cultivation fantasy, but here theyâre forced to try to play it straight against this horrible goblin child protagonist while he spits piss in their face
I canât believe my favourite movie of 2024 won best picture⊠that never happens. A sign perhaps that my tastes are becoming more pedestrian with ageâŠ? (!?)
Throughout the 2010s when the Oscars switched to preferential voting, expanded to ten nominees, and then grew membership through inclusion drives it really changed the calculus of what can win. You have the usual period dramas but also stuff like Moonlight/Shape of Water/Parasite/EEAAO now
I wasnât too impressed by the list of Oscar nominations this year, but out of the movies included, I thought Anora was easily the best. Iâm glad it did well, especially compared to execrable shit like Emilia PĂ©rez.
Not that the Oscars matter, theyâre the Game Awards of movies.
i thought it was insane that emilia pérez was financed by yves saint laurent for some reason because apparently they started a film studio???
they somehow did that and at least one of the posthumous godard shorts
den of thieves 2 was really something. i cant believe they went heavy on ice cubes bad actor son and withheld the sleazy gerald butler from us. what a booooring movie, i should have just made my friend watch ronin instead
it wasnt very good but i like that theyâre leaning into the fluffy hangout fanfic vibe kind of, reminded me of resident evil and metal gear or whatever where half the appeal is shipping male characters pointing guns in each others faces.
right i liked that aspect of it but it felt likke there was a very inconsequential middle part of that movie where they werent even doing thatâŠonce those two serbian guys just left the movie because there wasnt anything for them to do after forehead fucking gerard butler a lot of the yaoi also left the movie. and if youre going to do a car chase on the same stretch of highway in nice that ronin did you gotta do better than a gta mission. i mean thats really my big problem with it is that it was so videogamey it felt like the director thinks gta5 is the coolest game ever. its a little too cute
I love this interview with the hilarious Holly Woodlawn, my favourite of the Warhol superstars. A lot of her gestures and ad-libs stick in my brain, but especially this part at a minute and a half:
âWhat is your answer to the war in vietnam?â
âEugggh⊠thank god Iâm not there.â
âHow would you solve it?â
âI already solved it. Oh the war? Oh⊠Euh. A mathematician I am not.â
I watched Nicolas Winding Refnâs Pusher trilogy.
Itâs pretty good. All three films work, but I feel like I would have been better off just watching the first one. I think Pusher is a better movie than the sequels. Pusher might be better as a stand-alone movie than as a trilogy.
I like that the sequels are just about the guys from the first one who I would like to know more about
why did they put a different kind of cigarette in igors marlboro lights box in anora like I just donât understand the reason to do that!! so weird
really liked it tho
Anora was a lot better than i expected because with the way everyones talking about it online you would think the director is card carrying idf soldier who jerks off evilly and misogynistically to sex workers and made a porno movie but it literally was just very funny had great performances and was surprisingly touching. its like saying in the realm of the senses is pornographic like you must not be paying attention to the movie that much of your saying that kind of shitâŠits also literally the movie characters job like what was she supposed to be doingâŠ
