anyone seen sinners… hearing good things about this one

saw it yesterday. the build up to the action is very long and luxurious and very good. the second half is not as interesting unless you’re really into big directors doing genre stuff

my neighbors stopped me in the stairwell to tell me they were gonna see it and then IN UNISON said 'its scored a 98 percent fresh on rotten tomatoes!"

Yeah, everything before that was pretty good though. Some really nice snapshots of people carving out a place for themselves in the plantation south. It is a movie with a That Scene type of scene, and man that was such a fantastic portrayal of the power of music and the community it builds, and the way it weaves that theme into the narrative is pretty nice. But I thought the last third/quarter fell too much into generic action movie slop and lacked the vision of the preceding parts, so it in a sense falls apart at the end (though there are some still good scenes outside the action parts). Glad I impulse watched it.

I also watched Challengers over the weekend and that is one of the best live action anime movies I’ve ever seen, for sure.

also, I liked that the villains were somewhat inexplicably coded as Irish, because that and the (historically thoughtful) inclusion of Chinese characters made it seem like a direct callback to David Huddleston’s wonderful line in Blazing Saddles

it seems like it doesnt look like shit and is not totally miserable to watch so like i dont know it could be good??? they had to delay the release because there are not enough film processing labs in america anymore which is kind of baller like good for ryan coogler on spending that studio money shooting it in 65mm lol

Watched Hellboy: The Crooked Man, brought to you by Ketchup Entertainment (I guess I shouldn’t knock them, goofy name aside, since they put out that Porky Pig movie and are gonna get the Wile E. Coyote movie pulled from the tax write-off abyss).

It’s…fine? The acting can be…not great, here and there, and occasionally the limits of the low budget is apparent, but y’know what? I liked it. And honestly I think those restrictions and general sort of iffy production kinda adds to it, in a way?

The dude who does Hellboy did absolutely fine. Doesn’t have that booming Perlman voice, but who does. The movie is super claustrophobic and disorienting, which I’m pretty sure it’s meant to be, so it nails that.

I still haven’t seen the David Harbour one but I gotta imagine this one’s better than that.

Watched The Minecraft Movie with @Gimelrey . Jason Momoa was good and really channeled that Napoleon Dynamite energy. Jack Black was Jack Black. Almost everything else about the movie sucked.

Sinners ripped.

I saw Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii on imax today, because PINK FLOYD ROCKS.

The editors were on one. The sheer number of times they interrupted the concert to cut to a band member at Abbey Road’s cafeteria asking someone for a glass of milk and never receiving it… Brilliant.

They filmed a whole performance in the ruins of Pompeii but I guess that wasn’t cool enough so they also filmed the band separately in studio in front of a green screen so they could show the whole band performing IN FRONT OF the whole band performing:

I also appreciated this interminably long David Gilmore guitar solo shown with this default 2002 camcorder effect style paneling:

Poor Richard Wright had his big keyboard solo over tons of footage of mummified dead Pompeii people lying in the dust.

At one point Roger Waters did some vocal noises so gnarly that they green screened a giant flame whipping across the screen over his big weird face. Hell yeah.

I never knew Nick Mason had such a shifty burnout novelty knife bootlegger energy… He was definitely the best interviewee.

I just saw Apocalypse Now on a giant ass imax screen and it was beautiful

Also shamefully I realized I had never seen the middle of the movie before.

for vague reasons of research i ended up watching both the 2000s charlies angels movies. i think you can detect some of the cultural change from pre- to post-9/11 from the first (2000) to the second movie (2003) in the villain of the latter being an unpleasantly buff version of the movie director from mulholland drive

also in the first one a nude drew barrymore walks in on two kids playing final fantasy 8. film goof: unlike real life they do not get peeved that she interrupts their experience of ff8’s rich, emotional storytelling and intricate junction system.

Sinners was pretty good shit. The music work on it is worth the price of admission.

I think it was a decent waste time at a theatre on a warm day, or like an airplane movie, but otherwise I just thought it was a retread of a lot of ideas from other movies which were also bad. Kind of reminded me of a 20th century musical, which were just displays of Lush Budget and star power but not too much more.

Did it also seem to anyone else really dated? Like, the way each of the heroes in the movie signaled they were good was by whether or not they wanted to give or receive oral sex, like it was edgy, and also the giddy punctuation murder of white racists, it just felt like stuff that would have a whole theatre whoopin in like 2018 or like they did with Bacarau but just felt too late and expected in this case. Was this guy sitting on this script for that long?

I mean, Ryan Coogler has made a career out of working within the new studio system under strict ~intellectual property~ parameters. I appreciate the level of thought he brings to bear with his collaborations and treatment of themes. At the same time, I know he’s swinging broader than what I would prefer. I really enjoyed Black Panther aside from the suited up, colorful laser fight. The Klan coda felt tacked on but nothing was as bad as that. Hearing them say “cooze” several times was really funny, idk.

honestly yes this is starting to feel like an ideological campaign being waged entirely by and on behalf of people who are already 100% on board

it’s been like 10 years now of movie and TV characters virtue signaling eating pussy, time to start getting really graphic with it or moving on
