I do think the Barbie movie is a good move for him but unfortunately his history as a problematic Reddit user is not easy to forget. I mean, small potatoes compared to the fact that Mel Gibson is still out there doing his thing. But… Ya know
oh no i didn’t know he was a redditor. if you’re a really hot guy you don’t need to post idk what he was thinking
the mind reels with the range of possibility implied
I watched this a week or two ago, on your recommendation. My favorite parts were:
- The cg videogame graphic city shots of the train pulling out of the station
- His mustache-cover apparatus
It’s actually more irritating than like outright offensive but he was a regular in one of those Asian MRA bro subreddits for awhile, people dug up a few real bangers a couple of years ago
Also, y’all may have heard, the classic Kurosawa films have been getting 4K bluray releases in Japan, these past couple months.
There’s a few I have never watched. Life is long and you gotta save some treats for yourself along the way. I don’t think I’ve seen any of his movies in the post-dvd era, now that I think about it. I remember Mom and Dad had a 2-disc Netflix subscription and I had just bought an 800x600 DLP projector with my first freelance paycheck and the smell of flowers was sweet in the ai…
High and Low is one of the ones I’ve never seen. Turns out it’s good. Huh, how about that?
Why didn’t anyone tell me there’s an extended surf-rock night-club scene in this movie? God damn.
I guess I always assumed the whole thing was the hostage negotiation scenario, instead of a hostage negotiation scenario with the sickest damn detective procedural also built in. I guess when you are just a humble working midcentury japanese filmmaker who ascends to divinity tier you just can’t help but sneak in a second extra movie onto the reels.
I downloaded a remux of the disc. There’s a few short shots that are noticeably softer than others, wonder what that’s about? But in general, looks incredible.
I love how often the movie theaters here will announce “Yeah we’re just playing the American Bluray release with english subtitles we won’f turn off.” It’s delightful really.
I was ready to be cynical about Barbie but it kind of ruled.
And note to Felix there’s a throwaway line where a character mansplains about Stephen Malkmus
OH ITS OUT? IVE BEEN TRYING NOT TO GET EXCITED BUT ITS TOO LATE NOW IM SO READY FOR THE MOVIE THAT USED ALL THE PINK PAINT IN THE FUCKING WORLD
My partner somehow got a ticket for a preview screening but it’s really out Friday which I guess means Thursday in movie theater time
Everyone was dressed in pink in the theater and we were seated next to a Barbie collector club. Some dude in front of us appeared to have walked out during a very telling scene.
I am really hoping the drivein theatre I am going to go see Barbie in selects Oppenheimer as its second feature (they do two movies for $10 and you can camp in your car overnight to watch them because they start at 9pm)
My wife is incredibly excited to see this movie and the other night she was like “I really like how Margot Robbie is so unapologetically promoting and defending the Barbie movie” and I replied “I don’t think there’s anything respectable about a famous celebrity promoting a big budget Hollywood movie that she’s starring in” and she got mad at me
I’ve been feeling that too, considering the strike currently going on. It seems really glaring considering how it seems like all other film promotion has cut to the point that disney’s Haunted Mansion film debut got reworked from a red carpet thing to a screening at disney world with the theme park cast members instead of anybody involved with the film
I saw “How Do You Live?” Or whatever the english title was the new Hayao Miyazaki is called in English. Thanks @Victor !
I had the chance to see it without knowing a dang thing. Okay I read two english language reviews and went 1. these people are idiots, 2. Seeing the exact point the Japanese language escaped both of them and they no longer understood the plot. That almost made me burst out laughing.
I’m not going to say anything about the movie. Still I am going to review it. Did you think Miyazaki-san was going to come out of retirement with nothing to say? Did you think a certified artistic genius wouldn’t want to create something great? Given the chance to reflect on everything he has created? It is weirder and smarter than movies deserve. His movies have always been weirder and smarter than we deserve.
The whole time I was watching, as intended, the title was playing in my head. That it has a dumb English title sucks. You should be staring at this frame by frame, with the single poster and the title playing in your head. He had the artistic freedom to DEMAND no trailers, no information, no stills. Just his name and his pedigree and the title.
How Do You Live?
I could get into the scemantics of how the font on the poster might change the meaning, but oh well.
I am not going to spoil a single thing about it. It was wonderful for a genius to make something like this, one more time. If we get another one more time, then it happens.
The amount of shitty essays explaining the fucking obvious and the conjector are going to destroy the world.
Had a great time with it! Gonna suck not saying a word about it to anyone for months!
oh hell yes
fwiw i’m not being a stan here but i can’t find an instance of the cast crossing the picket line? seems like they stopped promoting last week on the 13th
my google news search did turn up write ups of losers calling her appearance “mid” on twitter, which is a stupid thing for magazines to write about in the absence of promotion but what else could they possibly cover
i watched white noise (2022) yesterday and it absolutely just falls apart in the back half but it was fun imagining @Felix watching national lampoon’s covid vacation and feeling catharsis. adam driver is a tough scene partner for greta gerwig i guess? i didn’t get anything out of her performance and i love that character in the book
it was the first baumbach i’d watched since screening greenberg (2010) at work and hating it despite my dedication to jennifer jason leigh and a soft spot for sound of silver
yeah the last act is a mess but as a big Gerwig/Baumbach skeptic I really liked the first two
meyerowitz is also good baumbach fwiw
