and to be totally clear, maverick was one of my favorite movies last year and I can’t wait for dead reckoning, the cruiser has had a phenomenal decade
I can understand being lukewarm on mi:3 but I don’t get how you can’t at least have grudging admiration for them allowing Phillip Seymour Hoffman to just like reprise his role from punch-drunk love but as an actual supervillain instead of a petty megalomaniac
Also it’s basically a remake of true lies and even has some weirdly similar set pieces
Also, and finally, I think most people give 4 the credit for turning the series into an excuse for Tom Cruise to repeatedly risk his own life, but up until 3 every MI movie was totally dissimilar to every one before it. The rest are all basically in the template of 3, just with even less interest in pretending Cruise’s character is a person instead of an action figure
MI2 is the movie that started Cruise repeatedly risking his own life for little reason aside from spectacle! That cliff he freeclimbed in the beginning of the movie is real and he really did that! MI2 is the only movie in the original trilogy that is in any way similar to the post-Bird movies.
thanks for reminding me I need to watch Walker again, I haven’t seen it since high school when I just watched all of his filmography
this is giving everyone involved with the franchise who is not john woo too much credit
also, they did use two stunt doubles in that sequence, one of whom being the completely amazing cartoon character ron kauk
author of one of the best titled/covered books of all time: spirit of the rock
back when i hung out with the type of people to know who ron kauk was, this book was lovingly referred to as “spirit of the kauk”
wow this is like sybian - symbian
i want to demo the nokia n95 on howard stern
yeah problem is Jim Carrey already did that bit in Ace Ventura 2
I wanna watch walker with at least 40 percent of you it’s so fun in a group
Finally saw Computer Chess last night. I’d always heard it was a little odd, but it was more odd than I’d expected and in ways I didn’t see coming. (Which is good.)
the weirdness in that movie is SO WEIRD. can’t recommend it hard enough, what an ending ahhaa. ALSO ITS GOT WILEY
Getting Limp Bizkit to make the Mission Impossible theme into 4/4 is one of the all time great anti-art statements
that’s funny, just this morning i watched results, the movie he made between computer chess and support the girls (wasn’t as good as either of those)
movie also provided the opportunity to hear my dad ask “what on earth is a Butthole Surfer!?” since they had a song on the original soundtrack CD and I left it in the car a lot, thanks MI:2
lol
I actually bought this album in my teenaged quest to own every piece of Metallica music because I Disappear wasn’t on any other records and it really is a very effective compilation of the worst music imaginable, just the absolute nadir of rock n roll. As a culture we never recovered from this
that random Luiz Bonfa track though… Oh it’s Tori Amos covering Luiz Bonfa.
I will say that final Hans Zimmer track is some fakey ethnic flamenco guitar bullshit and I love it
