I liked Knives Out but it seemed like such a cute throwaway thing that I’m surprising anyone wanted to do a sequel. agree w @Felix that Glass Onion doesn’t really warrant its current place in the discourse, but also resent the idea of being an apologist for it when I feel like Rian Johnson’s been all downhill since Brick.
Brick was Rian Johnson’s second worst film
This movie was a fun confection that never tried to be any more than a modern update to the cozy without any of the xenophobia and antisemitism that plagued Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers novels.
watched carol with my circle of lesbians who have so much drama over the past 10 years since college that it requires a fucking whiteboard to explain great movie
I watched Glass Onion cause of the chatter above. It felt startlingly inconsequential overall. I kind of couldn’t believe that two hours had passed by when they had. And I was honestly disappointed when I noticed because it felt like the mystery had just got started and was already being solved. I swore during Blanc’s big theory speech near the end he was actually just making something up to stall until another discovery was made… but no? the movie was really practically over.
It was still fun though. I’m surprised how much I liked Knives Out so I felt a bit more deflated by this experience than I probably normally would for a movie sequel that went direct to Netflix lol
lol I was going to watch Glass Onion last night but instead put on Fletch. my wife fell asleep before the most sexist/racist parts. very boringly put-together film carried by the wonderfully-revealed mystery and Chevy Chase (Joe Don Baker sucks in this?? illegal???) + a wholesome moral “LAPD are a force of evil”
was Knives Out his worst because those are the only two I’ve seen and that’s my ranking (Brick > Knives Out). overwrought teenager ennui hits truer
amazed that a take could be that bad. I watch too many procedurals to make sense of this. unless he means closed-circle mysteries? yes they’re period because they’re old-fashioned
it’s hard, even in a short TV episode the difference is obvious between someone who can write a mystery and someone that writes a story with a crime framing + a conclusion with an explanation. I ran out of Elementary episodes, final two seasons had a lot of this
yeah im curious to know what rian johnson movie is worse than brick because i think its a very boring rendition of “what if a high schooler was the continental op.” after i watched it i understood why they let him make a star wars movie though. i can’t imagine his star wars movie is more boring than brick
Is it Looper
Brick owns but Looper is real bad lol. We put on a few months ago and I was honestly shocked at how bad it was.
I’d might rank The Last Jedi lower, though. I know the proper progressive nerd opinion is to like it but I can’t imagine we’ll all think that in 5 years or whatever
The true progressive nerd opinion is to admire its iconoclasm, but still recognize it’s a shitty Disney movie made by committee.
Yes
my minor glass onion gripe is that I found the wardrobing really boring and obnoxious, it was all like net-a-porter (/ mr porter) e-commercecore, certainly appropriate for the characters but not something I ever want to look at.
still think brick would be better as a rugrats episode, if you slapped some klasky csupo music over the film I might be more into it
hahaa i forgot he directed looper that movie STINKS hey guys you know wht would be a cool idea? if homeless people killed each other over solar panels in the future lol
looper is very very bad
last jedi rules tbh even if the laura dern character doesn’t 100% work and is probably representative of his poorer instincts, he absolutely got a clever and earnest $300 million deconstruction of star wars produced after years and years in which no one had done anything of any note with that property, so credit for that
I liked benoit blanc’s ascots and big pants
I like a montage where somebody wastes their life away over the years and I liked the part where he shows up at the end and is just all “it’s fine I took care of everything” after he killed a ton of people off screen but otherwise didn’t care anything else to do with looper, couldn’t stand brick, never watched brother’s bloom because I hate every con artist movie except for hard eight because they’re all the exact same shit (somebody doing a long con on a con artist, either the apprentice con artist gets used and cut out at the end, or the old vet gets duped by who he thought was his apprentice etc, who gives a shit) and assumed it would be too, but maybe it isn’t
“proper progressive nerd opinion” you know people can just. like stuff.
it’s been 5 years since it came out, i watched it again recently and enjoyed it. i don’t have strong feelings about rian johnson’s work and i LOATHE disney and almost all star wars media from the prequels and on, but TLJ is earnest and paced well and understands the heart of it better than George Lucas did (if the prequels we just watched are any indication lmao). it’s also the only one of the sequel trilogy that isn’t offensively ubermensch-genetics bad. so naturally they retconned the whole thing immediately after and rian johnson was forever banned from making another Star War.
of all the hate for rian johnson AND star wars i see, TLJ makes the least sense. it does the barest necessary work to make a good star wars movie - mostly by aping empire - succeeded, and everyone loathed it anyway. what do people want out of these movies?
I’d have been fully cool with it if he really shook anything up and let the MC switch sides to being evil or form a third path between Jedi and Sith, like it seemed to be heading in. Without that, to my mind, TLJ flirted with making big changes but didn’t commit to anything. I’m sure Disney probably has more to do with that than Rian Jonson. But it’s just a junky Star Wars redo in the end and I’m not gonna celebrate that just because a lot of stupid people hate on it for very stupid reasons too. Not to say junky Star Wars sequel doesn’t have an appeal in its own right, it just isn’t for me.
tlj has some neat images or whatever but its also in the middle of a 9 film cycle none of which i could give a shit about if i tried (wanted to be a Lucas Auterist but it didnt work out for me idgaf about this kind of stuff)
