I kind of liked Avatar 2, but maybe that’s because I watched it immediately after playing Panzer Dragoon Orta for the first time.

I thought Avatar$ was basically fine as long as you switch off your brain and don’t think too much about any of it. It’s pretty much a cookie cutter 90s summer blockbuster, as though Cameron stopped watching movies after he made Titanic because he assumed he’d basically ‘solved’ filmmaking as an artform.
It’s also pretty aggressively a ‘white guy with dreadlocks’ power fantasy. My sister would probably love it.
The dialogue is stupid, once it transitions to depicting the Na’vi language as english, the kids start saying things like “that was totally sick bro”.

Still imagining the alternate timeline where we got 5 Cameron Battle Angel movies instead

I’m tempted to watch it if someone puts it A COMPLETELY LEGAL VRChat 3d theater, although I’d have to do that with the first one ‘to understand the story’ or whatever beforehand

Bad news I liked avatar 2 substantially more than I liked avatar 1… precisely because it is just a teen adventure movie where the teen aliens are constantly shouting “bro” and “sick” and “oh shit!!”

I think the final big battle in the movie is super impressively and creatively choreographed. I was having an amazing time watching mechs fight fish.

Unfortunately after shitting out all its best ideas at once in a diarrhea of incredible amphibious combat gags, it continues for another thirty minutes and drained my energy so hard I was almost mad by the close. I do remember having an incredible dumb blockbuster time in the middle and at the beginning of the third act though

Also yes there are a terrifying number of white guys with dreads in this movie. Awful!!

Yeah, but I mean it’s pretty much the whole vibe of the movie, the white guy assimilating into this tribal, spiritual (and depicted as superior) culture so completely that he becomes their leader. It’s a movie for white men and women who wear organic threads and go to sunset beach gatherings to sit in circles with tiki torches doing ‘ommm’ noises while someone rhythmically beats a bongo drum.

The military fetishism in the film combined with the above makes me think it’d go down well with the kind of person who’d have a dreamcatcher with healing crystals hanging across from a signed photo of Reagan and Thatcher (ie my sister)

Oh yeah absolutely, it’s totally consistent with the first movie in that way. I am just impressed at how many more individual white guys they managed to wedge into that plot line than the first movie did

In some ways this movie feels like a quiet remake of the first. The plot is somewhat parallel and features many of the same characters essentially reprising their same functions from the previous movie, or relatives of theirs continuing to explore the same things they explored. A lot of weird ass choices in this one (except for the final battle with the unhinged amphibious industrial design and mechs and shit. I have no complaints about the idea of a mech fighting a fish)

Tar was incredibly good. The funniest movie in recent years. I had the thought that, after watching this, maybe I would find Michael Heneke’s Cache kind of funny too? Doubt it, but…

My god that fucking ending is brilliant. So many wonderful painful ironies throughout. I was hollering!

God I wish I’d seen Tar under better conditions. I usually love going to a matinee, seeing the Witch at like 11am during a massive thunderstorm is one of my favorite movie experiences, but I just had the worst time, I was up in there to just escape drama for 3 hours but the projector was so dim I couldn’t read any of the credits, felt like I had fucking glaucoma or some shit, and the bass from the Black Adam showings in the surrounding theaters was so loud I could not focus on the movie, and I thought maybe I’d just be alone in there cuz it was fucking noon on a Tuesday but there were half a dozen other snobs and half of them could not stop coughing so I never felt comfortable taking off my mask. I remember thinking “this is really funny” during the scene with the bully and then “holy fucking shit” during the ending (felt a twinge of pride I didn’t immediately recognize the music/costumes) but man, I shoulda walked out, I def woulda walked out if I’d known it would be showing in town a few weeks later, I woulda had such a gas watching it at any other time in any other fuckin’ theater. That was the same place I had a miserable time watching Promare so maybe it’s just cursed. Thanks for reading my post where I remember the bad times I had at the movies.

enjoyed av2 alright. liked it better than the first one, at least. not, like, “good”, but i especially enjoyed the focus on the teens and take a shot every time someone says “bro” if you want to die

I need a flow chart to help me explain what complex social dynamics determine whether a character will say “bro” or “cuz” at any given time.

More thoughts: the girls and women in this movie spend a shockingly large time locked up or kidnapped and when they lampshaded it that one time I became incandescently mad

Zoe Saldana already had to do that in Guardians of the Galaxy
