she (unintentionally?) plays autistic in the brothers bloom and it’s a delight

This is a best picture winning film me and my friends always cite when talking about how little the Oscars seem to matter outside the month or so lead up to the show every year. I think you are the first person I’ve seen talk about it, even though I regularly talk to people about movies they’ve watched.

I watched the new Thor movie and my review is that it was very much a Thor movie. Backfired a bit as I went to watch it with my dad to take his mind off his lady friend fighting cancer and it turns out that the movie was about Thor’s lady friend dealing with stage 4 cancer, figured a Marvel movie would be the safest brainless fun option should maybe do research in the future oops.

Anyways bonus point to whatever the heck Christian Bale was doing, he looked cool in black and white.

story wasn’t consistently menacing enough. too much “shit happens” and not enough “the presence of people actively makes things worse”

I have been playing Fatal Frame 3 and my roommate and I have wanted to rewatch Pulse. But I thought it would be cool to turn him onto Noroi instead. But then I found out about Occult. Is it scary? Spooky and supernatural in a similar way to Noroi? If neither of us have seen it and are desiring something between Fatal Frame and Pulse… is it a good choice for a movie night you think? I don’t wanna watch the trailer for it because it’s apprently very spoiler-y with some of the images and stuff.

woah im reading the reviews of that on letterboxd and they make it seem way more interesting than you’d probably expect!

Occult is entertaining but not as good or as creepy as Noroi, in my opinion.

Have you ever seen The Eye? If not, I’d recommend that one.

I think I’ve seen the American remake. Watching the originals of those has been a worthwhile venture in the past, so I’ll consider this one as well.

I would also like October movie recommendations.

My wife and I have been watching a couple of J-Horror classics: Pulse, Cure, Ring. They all have their strengths. I’m particularly taken by Pulse because of how great that guy is who doesn’t know anything about computers.

We watched all these, but I don’t think we’re exactly fans or aficionados of the genre. We appreciate that they’re not overly gory or masochistic, but they can be a little too meandering.

Some of the movies we’ve liked are The Wailing, Detention, and The Medium.

I’d recommend A Tale of Two Sisters. It’s a clever Korean movie that seems a little random until you realize what’s going on.

I find that most remakes of Asian horror films are disappointing and you’re better off just sticking to the originals. There are some good remakes, though, such as The Ring (which may be the only case in which a remake improves in some ways on the original) and The Grudge (same director as the original, but stick to the director’s cut and not the theatrical version).

I should add that the Hollywood sequel to The Ring is bad and should be avoided. Also, my favorite of the Japanese sequels is Ringu 0, though it’s not really a horror film.

We saw ATale of Two Sisters! I did like it well enough. I’m a bit more taken with The Quiet Family because it’s goofy and offbeat. In the same vein of creepy and funny is Save the Green Planet, which is really out there.

recommendations for this month!

the eternal is about two cartoonish alcoholics learning about Irish mythology with christopher walken I loved it

the evil within (2017) is a completely obsessive movie that seems like its going to be problematic on the level of riding the bus with my sister but actually is an amazing tale of abuse. the story behind it is wild too! ITS MADE BY ANDREW GETTY

ghosts of mars is the only doom movie to me

fucking RAVENOUS it’s got a goofy ass soundtrack by one of the blur members and really gay tension between hungry men

everything everywhere all at once felt like trying not to gag as someone shoved their oversized hotdog fingers down my throat for two hours. actually hard to think of a movie i’ve hated so much

I seent that new Hellraiser and it’s… watchable.

I could tell the movie wasn’t going to be great because it opens with the premise ‘what if a rich guy handed you a rubik’s cube and said he’d fuck you if you solved it, but right at the end a knife came out of it’. No one in the scene sold how fucking bonkers ‘rubik’s cube with a knife in it’ is conceptually and just did normal horror movie things. No movie can recover from that!

Giving the puzzle box a knife is one of those things where it probably seems like a good idea but you really gotta make sure you re-read what you wrote lest you make about 60% of the movie about stabbing people with the puzzle box
