If people are rewatching Predator 2

Anyone know the symbol on the FBI guys (on the tie of the main FBI guy) anything from the real world or is it for the movie?

I assume it’s a fictional backstory to suggest they are alien hunters, but I don’t know that for sure and I’d be curious to know more about it either way.

Seems like a bit of lore that never got expanded on.

started going through the alien films for the first time lately, only seen the first 3 so far-- the first one by far the best imo (uncontroversially), second one was great if a little hammy in places but in a sort of endearing way, and third one was ok and totally different in tone to the first two, almost a bit goofy/zany at points.

excited to get to the real schlock with the fourth one and the weird prequels

I saw Nope and I think it’s just solidified my feelings that Peele was ruined by his success and the acclaim for Get Out. That was a script and screenplay that desperately needed some kind of censor for Peele’s instinct to make everything adorably neat and tidy. Nothing was actually surprising, all the potentially surprising things were lost in the screenplay’s bizarre overvaluing of stylistic markers for emotion or drama. It’s like a poetry…

…it rhymes because poems have to rhyme not because rhyming has any particular effect. This is especially lame to see when he’s doing so much with Spielberg, one of the best craftsmen of the mundane spectacle Hollywood ever had. It really highlights Peele’s shortcomings when the comparison is so near and constantly evoked. Every shot begs scrutiny, packed with pop cultural significance, but I don’t think there was a single image in this film that touched me in an emotional way and made that plea for close attention seem worthwhile. There are a couple images of intense violence that did make me wish they ended earlier, but honestly I think much of that was just indulgent.

how did you feel about Us?

I’m one of those who likes Get Out a lot but basically despises Us.

didn’t like prey, oops!

Summary

dumb liberal plot of SHOULDN’T YOU BE IN THE KITCHEN annoyed me. it’s fine for people to be okay when someone wants a different job, jeez o pete. like holy shit imagine if she walked up to the hunting boys and they were like weird but okay let’s go instead of making her do a rated t for teen ryona proving ground?
also like is she a bad ass or isn’t she? like she can’t throw an axe accurate without a rope (but even then she still can’t hit anything alive) except the opening shot of her was doing ninja flips and throwing an axe in the same place twice? I don’t watch a lot of new movies but UHHH the cg was fucking embarrassing. there’s a scene where someone gets a knife thrown at their stomach and the knife is constantly motion blurred and vibrating even though the guy is in focus and just falling backwards. wow a cg predator holding a cg bear, powered by silicon graphics computers. she got her ass kicked by a bunch of skinny whiny boys but oh wait the movie is about to end she immediately just fucking rips the predator to shreds because he can’t figure out how to use his own fucking gun

HES THE FUCKING PREDATOR. oh. they show close up details of the actual predator constantly, making him come off as a weird cybertreffen nudist more than like, a hyper killing machine

also the DO YOU SEE IT THIS IS THE GUN FROM PREDATOR 2 IT ALL COMES TOGETHER DOESN’T IT was stupid. the French drooling murder gang was stupid. the movie shouldn’t have any white poeple in it at all and should have been recorded in comanche not fucking dubbed in it for streaming services

the stupid flower that makes you cold and invisible to predator is dumb videogame shit too

loved hearing people i know be like “oh yeah watched it in comanche, pretty cool” and then finding out it was just a PR stunt dub track they put over the completely cowardly original english version in which everyone speaks english all the time except occasionally says some completely unbelievable shit like “i remember when dad sent me on my kuhtaamia… my ‘big hunt’” out loud, like what the hell are we doing lmao

but yes big hater over here too, high five

if the fucking mel gibson filmography could bother to have sync sound soundtracks in the Actual Languages Supposed To Have Been Spoken By The Peoples Depicted Therein then a dub can only position you as 2nd place to the most notorious still working racist in hollywood lmao at least in that regard

it’s actually not at all surprising that a ridiculously famous asshole who still has a career despite doing many crimes was able to get away with things in his movies that studios won’t let other people do

i mostly agree and would have just given it a pass without thinking twice (although something obviously already went wrong that you’re only releasing this on hulu, why not just… whatever) but the bit where they say a non-english word and then define it in english is like… i genuinely don’t know how i’m supposed to process that exchange in the reality of the film lol

keikaku means syncretism

Yeah I also hate this sort of thing. Almost as bad as those old period films where everyone speaks English except the comic relief character, who speaks English but with the accent of wherever the film is actually set

Hits like a ton of bricks every single time.

Jim Henson was too good for this shit world.

I’m the same way. Us has some good performances in it but I always felt like that Psycho-esque exposition dump in the third-act was basically an admission of failure by Peele. Nope is probably better simply because it has some fun ideas and doesn’t over explain things, but still.

Haven’t seen Nope yet, I liked Us less than Get Out when I first saw it, and didn’t particularly love it at all, but it’s grown on me w time. It’s one of those movies that has more memorable images than it does interesting plot or narrative stuff. I can see how that is a let down after Get Out, which has both. But ppl were anticipating a movie with a big idea or message behind it, and IMO Us is not that. The fact that Peele did that very poorly conceived Twilight Zone reboot immediately after that I think gives you a better idea where he was at with that one.

Beyond the actual movie, though, the most meaningful part of Us for me was how he set it in and around Santa Cruz. I feel like it plays enough like Generic Coastal Resort Town fine for most people, but as someone who spent a lot of time around there as a kid I found it weirdly moving. Filmmakers learn about a third California city challenge!

MEL GIBSON MADE THEM TELL A DOZEN DICK JOKES IN A DEAD LANGUAGE THEY COULD HAVE RECORDED THIS IN FUCKIN COMANCHE was the FIRST THING I screamed at prey

the best part was when she looks up into the grey sky and the grey title card shows up like its a 1950s movie

EXACTLY!!! how is it cool at all???

just realized that in a world with a flower that makes you you corpse cold they were incredulous about her monster sighting. why not just believe her??? what’s the fucking point of making her suffer in every way possible!!!

Watched The Great Muppet Caper today. Charles Grodin is good and I like the jokes more than the Muppet movie. It’s a better movie but doesn’t affect me as much emotionally as the rainbow connection and all the found family of weirdos putting on a show from the first movie.

I think Charles Grodin is probably my favourite actor. him dying was very illustrative

I like the great muppet caper a lot, especially the Peter Faulk scene. I do think the first one edges out for me because the great muppet caper is a perfect comedy but the first one is doing a lot of different things.

The bike scene is a work of fucking magic though, and I still have no fucking clue how they did all those shots.
