Finally got around to watching Nightcrawler.
Good lord what a creepy fucking character. Gyllenhaal manages to be greasier and slimier than his hair in that movie.

SMB: The Movie was a WTF Event that confused the literal child in me and every repeat viewing has me convinced that it was built with the same ethos that Kenna approached its Prince of Thieves toy line with
I still see Leguizamo as a cheesball James Franco-a-like without the dodgy acting school behind him (despite predating him) but Hoskins was a beautiful human being with the authentically hairy Cockney arms suited to pass as an Italian-American from Brooklyn…so they got that bit right
Super Mario Bros + Hudson Hawk would make for a really fun double feature.
Both critically maligned for stupid reasons, both attempting to do some screwball comedy with a different genre, both breakneck-paced with lots of fun special effects, both extremely charming. One is William Gibson by way of Theodore Rex, the other Thunderbirds by way of Looney Tunes. Can’t miss!
I need to check out Hudson Hawk. As a kid, I got the impression that it was trying to be a big city Indiana Jones and I had already been disappointed by Jewel of the Nile and some of those other knock offs. So I just gave it a pass.
That’s because you needed to watch Romancing the Stone which is really a much better movie than its sequel
which one has danny devito
Both, and he’s great in both, too.
kinda wanna watch the sandra bullock/channing tatum romancing the stone knockoff just to support the idea that its neat to make one of those
it’s an ideal airplane movie, it’s fine
Fun fact apparently Bob Hoskins turned down the role that Danny DeVito played in those movies, btw.
And then Kathleen Turner voiced Jessica Rabbit a few years later
Really kicking myself for not squeezing this one in on my last flight
Oh shit, Sandra Bernhardt seems to be killing it in this.
SHE’S SO GOOD
'history, tradition, culture… are not concepts, these are trophies I keep in my den as PAPERWEIGHTS" is a non videogame thing I think about a lot
A hair salon nearby has a giant Sandra Bearnhardt poster as of 2021 and it is incredible. Why didn’t she just get to be Sandra Bearnhardt in stuff for 30 years?
Saw “The Devil’s Backbone” yesterday, some thoughts:
The Orphans are all basically little shits to each other until shit gets real, which is pretty realistic. It isn’t cloying and they aren’t stupid, but do kid stuff as well. Generally well written.
The movie wasn’t “scary” or “spooky” or even that tense, but felt like a play given the limited set and characters. I love how it was shot, and the setting, and framing certain shots and cuts. Minimalist but very well composed. I loved it when the distant mountains and fields were framed by a door or window.
Surprised the bomb didn’t go off, but then again that would have been way too predictable.
Main bad guy getting his comeuppance felt “unrealistic” but maybe that’s my cynicism. Also he died in a really bad way so maybe that makes up for it.
Now we REALLY know where baby oil comes from.
Saw ‘Belle’ today, Hosoda’s newest … well, somewhat recent, movie. Felt a bit like a mixed bag tbh, seems trying to direct criticism at different topics yet remaining rather ambiguous about it (or was it just me hoping he’d double down harder and take a stance? idk) and not pulling through…
still, it looked rad most of the time (made me realize what today’s animation can look like if budget isn’t an issue) and that made up for it.
No need to catch it on the big screen though!
Annoyed at myself for liking Top Gun 2
Have to admit that I went to watch it yesterday, and was having a great time with Ace Combat: The Mission Movie, basically almost all the runtime i was
and glad that nobody could see how often i was grinning stupidly, this macho extravaganza killplane blockbuster somehow pushed all the right triggers, be it nostalgia or
5th gen airplanes!!!
It is basically a movie about the 1 minute short story interludes of Ace Combat games, filling out the blanks that the game cannot provide, unashamed about celebrating aerial warfare, while being almost endearingly optimistic ‘they don’t make them like this anymore’ 1980ies Action Movie fodder that nobody in their right mind would sign off nowadays.
Loved it.
