i really donāt want to get into a debate about this tbh but that is definitely a mischaracterization of cruelty squad in a bunch of different ways. just like with Death Grips fans, just because something attracts some reactionary elements in its fandom doesnāt mean thatās what the thing itself is. and that kind of lens on media has become really tiresome to me. and i wish people would stop falling back on it because it strikes me as really lazy. like a piece of media or donāt, i donāt care, but iām just so tired of this debate.
also i like a lot of the stuff around the Haunted PS1 space, but i think any time things become oversaturated they have a tendency to coalesce around easy cliches which is obvs what has been happening with this and boomer shooters. doesnāt mean itās not a worthwhile space to do stuff in, but i do wish curation these days wasnāt so overwhelmingly āvibe basedā and we went back to more āa bunch of different stuff doing things in interesting waysā being the main archetype. honestly it would be funny to see more people doing puzzle platformers again now that theyāre so out of favor - tho i guess there are some folks like Sylvie or some UFO 50 games doing that.

did you know that there was, for some reason, two different C64 ports of space harrier for the US and UK markets
I love C64 ports because they are all clearly made by people just trying to copy the gameās behavior from looking at it and mostly getting close, it was kind of the first and only time that there was a platform popular enough to have that many of those but unpopular enough for rightsholders to allow it

i donāt know what debate you imagine iām enacting, i played the game and i found it cynical and unpleasant and its aesthetics played out
my last thought on this tbh but this is a consistent debate online with anything with edgy aesthetics that attracts a significant fanbase of edgelordy teens and young men is like nazi-adjacent. and i think thatās a really inaccurate/flippant way to characterize Cruelty Squad. so iām not āimaginingā anything lol, iām just responding to what you said. youāre free to not like it, a lot of people donāt like it - but i donāt agree with that interpretation.

i donāt engage with whatever space youāre seeing that in. i went into the game when it came out not really knowing much of anything about it and it left a strong negative impression. iāve not read anything since thatās made me want to reconsider. iām sorry that it looked to you like i was parroting online discourse.
ville kallio does seem like a relatively decent fellow even though heās read too much mark fisher or something so thatās good at least.
