Mighty News Thread Number 9: No Silksong in Mudville

I still don’t know what the fuck an extraction shooter is. Is there searching and action in that? Or does it simulate immersiveness?

You go into a map and have to collect shit Fallout/Skyrim style and fight NPCs and other players/teams trying to collect the same shit as you and then get out of the map. If you get out you can use the stuff you found the next game.

Some of them have literal crypto integration and a gray-regulation market for buying selling in game garbage.

The thrill is if you die or kill someone they lose all their shit. It’s like being PKed two seconds into Ultima Online but that’s the emotional high/low.

Ohhhhhh! Thank you! So like that ARMA zombie mod from a couple years back but with a different victory condition and a degree of persistence? Is this what Destiny is–I had just assumed it was like FPS Diablo, like a cousin of Borderlands.

I swear I’m not being obtuse, I literally had no idea this was a game type. I just know about side scrollers and overhead games.

Destiny is you shoot stuff to get more gear to shoot stuff to maybe one day find 5 other people to do the actually fun raids but 90% of the time what you are shooting doesn’t matter and neither does dying.

That last part sounds like a line in the trailer for the best action movie of 2025

It is a genre with an amusingly-named playstyle known as “ratting”, which is basically entering into maps with minimal gear, sometimes none at all, with the intention of just hiding in the shadows the entire match, avoiding any interaction if at all possible, grabbing whatever you can, then scuttling for an extraction point just to turn some kind of minimal profit.

This went from this sounds awful and I don’t want to play it, to maybe I should try one.

I probably should have learned from my fortnight experience.

I am increasingly convinced that everyone who says shit like this has some violence they desperately want to justify and excuse by saying it’s just human nature

How much of the modern game industry is built off that back of that zombie mod? Battle royales, extraction shooters, and I feel like there were some other trends that spawned from it.

A new Zelda this Friday would have my teen self overjoyed. My adult self is struggling to enthuse.

this game came out on early access yesterday, normally I would never want to play an early access thing if I can help it but I do kind of want to experience the game at it’s most miserable before it gets smoothed out from everyone complaining. like apparently right now your base has a water supply and the water runs out even when you’re offline and if you lose all your water you lose all your stashed gear. that sounds like it’d actually be great if you could have a shared base with your friends you were all responsible for.

they’ve said it can be played that way

PvPvE modes are compelling for the same reason invasions in fromsoft games are

you’re trying to go about your business then “oh fuck oh fuck uhhh.”

or, you are the cat and they are the mouse and you hope they are not a mouse with cartoon competency

i’m way less than half as good with twice the opponents but that’s why it’s satisfying

‘Must play’ has become ‘must do’ is what I was searching for

The way I hear some of my coworkers talk about new releases, the popular mode people engage videogames with these days sounds more like keeping up than playing around.

I still have barely played breath of the wild and consequently haven’t picked up whatever that new one is, but I might take an Elden ring break (which I still haven’t had time for itself since July) to give this one a go.
