yeah, I’ve seen multiple people start playing the hack ~ironically~ and invariably they begin to regret their life choices, quit playing it, and vow never to touch it again
a full blind playthrough is somewhere between 40-60 hours long, which is far, far longer than any other 2D search action game I’m aware of, especially one so devoid of content. so many better uses of one’s time
i checked the date because i was sure this had to be april
it actually looks good. I can’t believe it. most surprising announcement of this E3
I pretty much knew this was coming, but I’m still pleasantly surprised. Looks like they’ve learned at least a few good lessons from their bungles with Samus Returns.
Now announce a randomizer mode plz.
Ah here is the place for “this looks fine” takes.
I liked Returns ok until the bit where the counters bogged all traversal down and this looks like they might have addressed that? So put me down for ‘I will probably have a mild but pleasant time’.
well i hate to be a slobbering fanchild here but this looks legitimately cool. really is just what i want to see.
massive props for having the trailer be mostly silence and eerie minimalist sound design, punctuated by very readable in-game scenarios. like fusion, it doesn’t feel like the fast and busy pace is aiming for “epic” so much as “urgent”.
the flexibly articulating robot pursuer is unnerving just to watch in execution; feels perfectly close to the bone in that that clean, fluid look exactly matches the aesthetics and performance idealised by the modern tech industry. like the best stuff from half-life and portal, it sparks the horror of being confronted by technological opacity
I like to think that the thematic through-line of Fusion → Other M → Dread is Sakamoto realizing that true terror is not exotic space jellyfish or foreign pirates, but the wrath of the American military-industrial complex.
It’s not the most original subtext, mind you, but it’s interesting to see expressed in an interstellar sci-fi setting, especially as a counterpoint to the space-jingoism of, say, Halo or the Prime series.
i don’t even care if it’s fusion again at least there’s a chance it’ll be fusion with a climax this time
Just when I thought I didn’t have to care about this series any more
Alien continues to shine through. Maybe Metroid 5 will borrow concepts from Alien Resurrection.
go play Vitality
i think it looks trash but i have deep affection for fusion (and only fusion) so i’m gonna play it to see how it follows it up :-#
There’s a good chance that one day I’ll just play this instead of all the other Metroid games I’ve never gotten around to (i.e., most of them outside of the Prime series).
Really digging the specific fallout that Adam doesn’t give orders in this one.
I dunno the more I see I’m elevating this one to cautious optimism.
I will play any sequel to Fusion. This might turn out pretty good but I never played Other M so maybe I’m not cynical enough.
I wonder what the final suit fully upgraded will look like. I hope it makes the sprite two or three times bigger.
Incredible dread from this post.
imagining the muscle-fiber-looking parts of the new suit becoming incredibly ripped and swole
