Nah, they’re all the same values readily available online (slaps stack of NFC cards)
For Zelda they just ban amiibo FWIW
This is interesting because the Samus Returns amiibos just gave you reserve tanks (in a game that otherwise had no reserve tanks), and nobody cared about those.
what? amiibo are not banned in botw and it’s been an absolutely massive controversy at all times
Oh, huh. I just see the videos of the runs that say “No Amiibo” in the title
I may be an overeducated city slicker lawyer here but it seems really obvious that they should just be banned?
there are runs which are not on those leaderboards because they disagreed with the rules or left the community.
i don’t know if it’s obvious, none of this stuff is obvious really. they thought the best way was to put a flag on amiibo runs so you can see which is which
It doesn’t seem that egregious when you can just get a duplicate card or use an NFC spoofer, both of which are pretty cheap. All you’re missing is the real plastic.
Unless they got precious about Amibo piracy.
banning amiibo is not something you can easily do as a moderator. they picked the option which they felt was the best compromise - it results in a filterable board where you can pick thru amiibo/dlc/region
if you ban amiibo too many people would be outraged because they want to go as fast as possible and amiibo is “legitimate” and “authorized” or whatever, it’s hard to make hard arguments for or against so you end up with permissive compromises and just try to categorize everything so filters can be applied if you are looking for real fairness and parity
Why wouldn’t use of amiibo put it in its own category? I suppose there’s an intrinsic balance to taking time to scan them but even as a lay person it’s transparently skirting the game economy for money.
It’s about equity if you’re competing. If you want to know how fast someone beat it, I would want to know if they used amiibo or not. Same if you want to know if you’re faster than someone else.
the “amiibo” flag there is effectively a soft category. click Filter > amiibo and you can filter by that specifically. you’ll also note runs by one person appear twice if they did an amiibo and non-amiibo
the benefit here is the main board is bigger and cleaner and more comprehensive, which is good for motivation and community.
in a community this big, some people will disagree and do their own thing, i don’t think you can cover everyone perfectly
anyway i hate amiibo but i blame nintendo. the mods are stuck in a bad spot
Oh, I think arguing about whether they’re “authorized” is specious at best. Was there ever a call for a “no amiibo” category a la “no glitch”?
yes that’s what i’m saying. there were several runners, including narcissa wright, who left or sidestepped the botw speedrun community on speedrun.com in part because amiibo and non-amiibo were on a combined board. people have varying ideas about how it should be done
many arguments were made
you know i would really like to hear your full lawyer takedown of speedrun categorizations, but i promise you i’ve been down this road and it is an extremely dark one
it feels like atoning for the sins of videogame developers and hardware manufacturers. like, cursing fucking sony for putting a goddamn PS1 emulator in the PS2 and making each revision run slightly differently
sorry back to regularly scheduled metroid
i think the new game looks… ok? but i hate hollow knight so maybe i am the target market
i’m playing metroid fusion for the first time it’s pretty good i probably won’t need to play this new game
Handhelds are very good for Metroid. Both 2 and Fusion have really tight pacing!
i wonder what that says for a switch metroid, then
I meant this as a metaphor/joke, but having caught up on the metconst discord’s reaction to the Dread trailer (picture a bunch of middle-aged men saying “this isn’t SM”, with a few zoomers saying “looks interesting maybe”) I think this almost literally true lmao
fusion is probably my favorite metroid game but it isn’t the best “metroid” game if you know what I mean
Same for Prime 2
