I think the PS1 core supports runahead and the CPU load isn’t really an issue on a 3B because most of the interpreter-based emulators are single threaded anyway so it has at least one idle core at any given time… not sure about Mame though, and conversely I’m not sure what light gun support is like in Beetle, so I should probably wait for someone else to upstream this. the problem with that is that I think CRTpi lost its maintainer last year when everyone got a mister instead so, well, who knows
Shout out to the Microsoft N9Z-00001 media keyboard. Unlike the three Logitech keyboard-with-trackpad models I’ve owned I was able to open it (7 Philips #0 screws under the feet/battery cover) and clean it after my partner spilled tomato soup on it. The keys also pop out for easy cleaning if need be and there are drains in the bottom of the case so liquid won’t pool if it gets through to the inside.
From the biggest booster and independent innovator of gyroscope aim for competitive shooters, author of JoyShockMapper:
Fortnite now has gyro on all supported platforms and flick stick. Epic hired me to design and implement the new controls. This means:
- Works on PS5, PS4, Switch, Android, and PC (if you have a PS5 or PS4 controller plugged in)
- Gyro Modifier button can be set to Disable, Trackball, or Invert, independently in each axis
- Vertical Camera Reset button
- Choose what aim modes / build modes activate gyro
- Touch to activate/deactivate gyro on mobile
- Natural sensitivity scale
- Choose between Player and Local space gyro (Player Space is default controllers; Local space is default for handheld)
- Native flick stick
- JSM-style acceleration
- JSM-style smoothing and tightening
- and more!
There are always more features that could be added, but I hope you find this to significantly raise the bar for native gyro controls.
I know folks don’t like being pinged unless they’re being asked for specifically, but I just wanted to make sure no one misses this. I’m probably biased, but I do think this could be huge. Wildly popular cross-play competitive shooter gets advanced gyro controls and native flick stick on all applicable platforms, and they’re making a big deal out of it with marketing material, including an in-game video (mine!) highlighting the features and encouraging players to try them out.
I’m praying this update works well (millions can always find bugs somewhere), is well received (players see the potential and embrace it), and is influential (we see more of this in other games).
I don’t care about Fortnite but will be curious to see if (how?) this moves the needle on gyro adoption at all.
the Switch version had gyro aim from the get go, so the big get there is flick stick
I think it’ll be hit or miss, one of the big things not mentioned here is that turning gyro aim turns aim assist off and, yes, a sane person would argue that fine gryo aim and 360 degrees of flicking invalidates the need but there’s always going to be a chunk of people who want it, nevermind the entire ecosystem without gyro (Xbox)
gotta have your auto-tappers
This is fascinating. I knew these existed but I’d never thought to see what they look like before.
It is weird though that they’re selling this with pics of some consumer using it for games. Of course they can’t show someone using it in a clickfarm, but still! I can’t imagine a game which needs constant tapping.
Years ago I would have been able to point at some idle games I could imagine benefitting from constant tapping while I sleep (as per the hilarious marketing picture on that page of someone sharing a mattress with a phone and tapper) but only the very first wave of those games really rewarded actually physically tapping a lot. The marketing photos look like they’re showing someone tapping on orbs but I have no idea what genre of game that is supposed to be, haha.
yeah these pictures are great
Maybe it’s still useful for the continents of click-to-gather building games. Idle games have been around long enough, there are presumably competitive ones now? Maybe those still reward/demand interaction.
I know I’ve seen bubble popper, popcon-like hypercasual games, I wouldn’t be surprised if some are hooked up to currency
the Steam Deck’s right analog stick has some kind of touch sensitivity that lets you control it with gyro if you like lightly rest your finger on it.
watching videos of people disassembling the keychron c1/c2 after peeling off a foot to find there wasn’t a screw – turns out it’s clips! I bent a nail and had to cut them down short again lol
it’s very inventive and cute that they’re almost all cutting the foam from the packaging to use as a damper, love it
do not love the mumbling over a lo-fi hip hop remix of the super mario odyssey theme
as far as the board goes, I like this lower-cost no-wireless offering from keychron but wish they’d sell a barebones model without switches or caps like the GMMK. swapping gateron blues for kailh jades is night and day. still, not many full-size hotswap options and this should feel better than the broken board it’s replacing
casting a damper to fill the bottom of the case with silicone to finish it off
Bumping up @doolittle’s underappreciated keyboard resource mega post from last year bc i need to do some soul searching before inevitably caving on the price of a Filco Convertible or whatever
There have been a few developments in the past year, most notably the Kinesis Advantage 360 (mass produced ortho/concave/split design, benefit of injection-molded case, Kinesis backing ZMK firmware for the wireless SKU). I’m waiting on the custom order options this summer.
Lots of new DIY/boutique variants similar to the Lily58, all should be on https://jhelvy.shinyapps.io/splitkbcompare/
I’m busy now but should update it next month and host it on a GitHub page, thanks for digging it out.
fwiw I think Keychron has the best bluetooth functionality of any mech board, my only misgiving is their keycaps are double-shot shine-through ABS rather than PBT but the same is true of most Filco boards
I am sincerely alarmed at Filco US list prices — for standard layout prebuilt I’d be looking at Leopold or NiZ’s electro-capacitive keyboards above $150 and Keychron’s wireless/hotswap K line under $100.
every idle game
Over the weekend I was making my own padhacked arcade stick but out of the 6 buttons I soldered to the PCB, only 1 worked
I guess that means my ground and single button worked, so it’s not ALL bad. I have no idea what I did wrong though for my other buttons. Wonder if it’s something wrong with the cable bc when holding the wire to the pcb, the button input doesn’t get through
well thats disappointing! Time to break out he multi-meter.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Bring back one handed controllers already!!
Yes!
Almost every game recognizes it and maps controls accordingly.
It feels like exactly what it is - a 360 controller made nicer in many small ways.
For anything that needs modern controls the Series S/X controller is great.
Solid all-rounder.
Here’s what I very happily use for pc gaming.
