i grabbed the M1 when they first put that and - other than being wired - it’s basically perfect for daily use.

almost the exact same shape as the viper ultimate too. slightly bigger hump, slightly wider, slightly shorter. which reads as better to me based on my 3 years or whatever with this viper. other than that, it’s just swapping out razer’s optical switches for more standard kailh ones and slightly different button shape. should be an easy recommend as long as the scroll wheel doesn’t suck.

there’s little i need to say honestly, this (very detailed) review effectively echoes my feelings on the controller:

one thing i’ll mention that isn’t addressed: the face buttons are slightly different than the ones on the regular dualsense. they feel a bit “thinner” and seem to require slightly less force to activate. so, they feel a bit less “solid”, but mashing is easy, quick, and low-impact, and holding buttons is easier

the little hard case thing it comes with is sleek and cool but is really kind of shit, it’s incredibly obnoxious to charge it while it is in the case

half-dome back buttons are by far the best-feeling back buttons of any controller so far, but only having two rather than four is such a miss

the d-pad really should have been modular like the xbox elite, wtf sony

OS-level integration is excellent

hand-feel is better than OG dualsense, which for me was already the best hand-feel controller. the grippy material on the back of the prongs as well as the rounded edges are huge pluses here

trigger stops are a gamechanger, you still get full analog range even on the shallowest setting. still wish there was at least an option for an even shorter, basically digital throw

triggers have these little grippy ridges on them, this is huge and should be on the base model

r1/l1 feel a bit better than vanilla. those are the weakest buttons on the original dualsense imo (bit too mushy)

pros

  • kailh gm 8.0 switches are the ones i put in my gpw, really firm and crisp clicks
  • grips are just embossed plastic — no rubberized coating or pieces to wear or shine
  • zowie-style onboard switching for dpi and polling rate
  • 2.4ghz and bluetooth, toggle with switch on bottom, usb-c
  • great optional usb-c paracord cable
  • superfluous rgb is tasteful
  • sensor tracking is fantastic after my gpx “spun out” twice from invisible cat hair on my desk. best-in-class parts all throughout

cons

  • software leaves something to be desired — but it’s better an afterthought than an officious tray app
  • indistinct steps on scroll wheel (but it’s a dead ringer for my zowie monoprice ambidextrous mouse from ten years ago)
  • shape is a little long and wide in the back for fingertip grip, and lacking a hump for palm/claw comfort. very viperesque; i prefer the gpw/gpx

for $49 it’s handily the best ambidextrous wireless gaming mouse available. you have to spend ~3x more to get anything appreciably better.

alas i am just princess/pea regarding ergonomics of shape. perhaps an m3 mini?

if they make a g502 clone with some kind of free-spinning scroll wheel they’ll have a mass hit, but this makes a lot of existing good ambidextrous options into expensive niche products. good on the annoyed zowie fan in exile that guided this thing!

I wonder if the audience for this is mobile gamers? I am not sure the intended people picking this up are the steam controller types given the huge size of the touch area. The button arrangement in the bottom is very mobile game UI esque

oh I don’t mean to play games on phones–I mean that this might be aimed at people who have grown up using a touchpad on a phone for aiming and that using a controller like this would fit their muscle memory and retain their skillset

while I think some of the idea is to help transition mobile gamers to pad or M+K players a pad to play on with some reasonable precision, they’re also encouraging use of the entire touchpad surface whereas someone who played on phone would probably keep to a small part because on a phone, you wouldn’t want to block your view by doing a sick flick

there’s also the issue that since the pad is treated as a mouse, it has no aim assist where mobile games definitely still have some of that
