I’m realising that this seems to stem from the different lineage of the Sega-Microsoft vs Nintendo-Sony controller archetypes; Microsoft added bumpers above the index finger targets (cf. Xbox/Dreamcast controller vs Xbox 360/One controller), where Sony added shoulder buttons below (cf. SNES vs PS1/2/3 controller)
so it seems the way you’re expected to use the buttons is perhaps entirely different; Microsoft expect your index finger to lie on the triggers, and use your knuckles to use the bumpers where Sony expect your index fingers to be on L1/R1, and I guess that means you’re supposed to use your middle finger for the triggers? it’s the only vaguely comfortable way to make it work
but also why the fuck does it take so much more actuation force to push × on a PS3 controller vs PS2, christ

I suspect the membranes were a wear point on PS2 controllers and they used a denser material
You could theoretically swap the membranes to change the force because they’re the only mechanism. I can’t recommend disassembling a DS3 but now I’m curious

it’s great, they basically let their most prestigious engineers run wild from about 2004-2008, produce a bunch of shit that nobody wanted and that barely worked as a product that was supposed to be hooked up to an equally impractical plasma TV, then just in time they were like “holy shit just make it a PS2 again fuck fuck fuck” and a couple of good games happened to come out around then too
the manufacturing cost of a launch PS3 was over $800! they were talking an over $200 loss on those things

One thing I’m finding increasingly odd about Isekai Uncle is how he continues to be totally unaware of emulation (like how above he’s seeing a miniconsole as a way to revisit games properly as opposed to a gimmick). It makes me wonder whether emulation is rare in Japan or whether it’s like pachinko where everybody does it but its existence can’t be acknowledged in a manga

I think Rudie can give more insight on this but my impression is that they were very late to it for the most part (not that no Japanese people were working on emulators – I have a DMG Gameboy emulator that runs on an 040 Mac whose documentation is all in Japanese, from about 1997, just that it was never mainstream), because they were much more inclined to barter access to, and appreciate, lots of old dedicated hardware for various purposes, rather than single, powerful computers (they were a couple crucial years behind on Wintel stuff when emulation took off while being ahead on a lot of other tech), and on top of that I think the meritorious aspects of copyright infringement or open source contribution aren’t/weren’t as widely admired over there.

and I’ve definitely known people who only ever had consoles rather than PCs in the US who permanently regarded emulation as “complicated” and “stealing” rather than viewing microconsoles as “limited” and “gimmicks” so even though I’m very firmly in the latter camp and am pretty loud about its merits, it doesn’t seem hard to imagine that japan skews heavily toward the former.

I feel it’s means something that when I go out to places that have coin-op machines, it’s only the ones like by Nintendo or Taito that feature big “This is not running MAME, this is a genuine arcade experience” while the Williams machines probably are actually running MAME with oem roms

For the most part only weirdo adult nerds had home computers (for pornography.) So you didn’t use dad’s computer. There was that terrible saturn emulator from the early 2000s. But like 80% of the documentation and programing on old video games and emulation has come from the west.
I also imagine Nintendo suing you into prison looms large.
