Sorry y’all, $20 soldering iron vs. $20 new keyboard? Maybe soldering iron wins
$75 soldering iron vs. ≤$75 keyboard? No way

i am sort of just tagging in here regarding soldering irons, not making a coherent suggestion to jellicle, but all i heard is that anything cheaper than the one i linked is not worth getting! the iron is going to be of questionable value if you buy it to solder exactly one thing ever anyway
we stan a soldering kit that looks like homebrew audiophile equipment
hilariously I was just gonna reply and say I’ve seen a USB amp for proprietary snake oil lossless formats that looks exactly like this down to the OSD
what now, pc master race?
playing IIDX on Sound Voltex broke my brain
it’s important that he mentions that he’s not interested in trains, since he looks like such a stereotypical trains guy
This is the VKB Gladiator NXT and with the HOTAS shortage we’re in, you won’t find better value flight stick under 200
Gonna maybe pair it with a Thrustmaster TWCS throttle someday, or the VKB TECS if it ever comes out
in the past 48 hours, I’ve gone from “I want to buy a cheap wireless keyboard because I’m an idiot and put linux on a home theater PC” to “okay I’m going to either buy a PCB or a hot-swappable keyboard, get a mix of switches going and paint some keycaps up”
someone please talk me down
whoa whoa whoa
paint some keycaps?
convert an inkjet printer for dye sublimation
but really, even I, the weirdest keyboard weirdo, have a wireless logitech board with a built-in trackpad for HTPC uses
I have the Steam controller for mousing but I need a completely discreet keyboard doing actual dumb shit in the terminal and it’s slowly evolved into “no I have to do the dumbest thing short of dropping 3-500 bucks building an aluminum shitkicker”
also I figure dropping 20 bucks on spray paint and another 15-20 on a blank keycap set is worth it over hunting down all the colors I have ideas for
hotswap PCBs are great and you can get a 65%-in-60% kit with few compromises these days for relatively cheap
if you don’t care about firmware flexibility, I recently built a commission with a GK64x kit and was very impressed for the price (amazon, aliexpress)
KBDFans.cn is the best place for a one-stop more custom thing imo, they’ve got lots of cases and PCB options that support QMK. I built my partner a board with the aluminum Tofu case, aluminum plate, and a DZ60RGBv2 PCB. My brother built a board with the same PCB in their walnut case.
I wouldn’t paint keycaps because I like the grit of PBT but this blogpost covers painting keycaps in some detail:
While you’re at it, consider coming over to the true cyberpunk decker future with a split/ergo thing: https://jhelvy.shinyapps.io/splitkbcompare/
I would also be remiss if I didn’t offer to loan my switch tester.
You could even put a PSP thumbstick and haptics on a board!
Buy my wireless filco majestouch minila air for $20 haha jk… unless?
switch type? I’m leaning towards browns or blues because I have Cherry reds on my main TKL and I like them but I need some feedback
I want 65% because I am a slave to arrow keys and PgUp/Dn and I’ve been eyeballing the Keychron K6 since it’s hot-swappable but otherwise I was probably going to hit up the RK68 as a “I don’t want to work for this” option and save customization obsession for later
