methods of input (Part 1)

apple made the first commercial mouse and I don’t think they’ve ever made a good one

look i was just making a monkey’s paw joke w/r/t the color flavours ok

the puck is obviously no good. the current magic mouse is Just Fine i think, were it not comedically priced

apple input devices are terrible except the fuckin’ excellent trackpads

the trackpad is like the best reason to own a macbook. they make every other trackpad feel like an insult

may as well say that I feel like the only person in the world who likes the butterfly keyboard. obviously the biggest problem with the thing is it breaks, but that’s a pretty binary state: your keyboard is either broken or it ain’t. and mine ain’t. but everyone seems to think it sucks in addition to breaking all the time, and I kinda like it.

it’s fine when it works but it doesn’t work, mine get fucked up every 6 months at least

Maybe it’s worse with certain mouse grips? My school had them in every classroom and my family has owned multiple of them, and it’s just never been an issue for me

just confirming this is a real problem and not just something people said arbitrarily! it’s apple’s fault for making a poorly thought out mouse that is aesthetically neat but functionally shit. it’s a longstanding apple habit tbh. i am glad you didn’t have issues with it!

“iconic but deeply flawed” has made a comeback in recent years, yes

as an aside, sorry if i’m coming on too strong! i feel like i probably didn’t communicate my tone well enough - i guess i perceive a certain mentality around apple stuff (not relating to you directly, but when apple’s involved i have a defensive stance), where if you point out a design flaw there is a culture that it is the user’s fault and not apple’s. it’s a weird thing and i think i overcompensate unwittingly sometimes

i just REALLY hate that mouse lol. flashing back to the subtle diagonal shifting while playing diablo 2 and starcraft right now. why not just make a fucking oblong mouse like every mouse ever made up until that point?!?!?!

think different

yeah despite all the problems i have with my macbook, this is entirely true

basically no one is ever reasonable about the parts of apple devices that are great and terrible

for example, their chiclet desktop keyboard is massively underrated – has had the the lowest input latency and response times of any low-profile wireless keyboard for years and years and years and everyone else is busy overengineering mechanical keyboards to compete – but their laptop keyboards were absolute useless shit for years and they have never made a good mouse

Apple’s mice were (are?) bullshit because you can’t right click, that’s the stupidest goddamned thing

Why is everyone complaining about Apple mouse ideas they abandoned in 2009. You might as well complain about Dick Cheney

Idk it’s kinda fun

just frothingly livid every keynote address that passes by without Tim disrupting the stagnant trackpoint nub space

Thankfully, Apple adopted USB along with those iMacs so you could just grab a Logitech optical mouse and have right click and a scroll wheel in OS9. An Apple Extended Keyboard II and a USB optical mouse was a killer combo. I bought one of these in like 2000 and it still works:

That thing is a tank, my dad got one with our Power Mac G4 in 2001 and he’s still using it on his Mac Pro today

Mine is still in the “big” laptop bag. It’s been all over the US and to the UK. It’s been beaten on HARD during its long life with not a single issue. The Microsoft optical mouse I bought around the same timeframe lasted less than a year.

Edit: The Toyota Hilux of mice?

Double edit: FUCK the PUCK?
