My thoughts exactly, death to the demon Allegra Gellar etc

went and test fitted the wheel base and pedals on my stand and of course it’s different enough from prior models that it doesn’t work out of the box, lmao, I need both slightly longer (~30mm) and slightly shorter (~12mm) M6 bolts and Home Depot only seem to stock the former

This sounds promising at least @meauxdal

It’s really interesting how they describe the N64 controller as much more accurate than modern analog sticks. Received wisdom (and it holds true for calibration profiles I’ve done) is that 360 sticks are much better than prior generation, Xbox One & PS4 sticks are much better, etc. I wonder if it’s due to personal preference or a more consistent spring force in modern controllers.

i can’t say what they mean for sure, but they probably mean “better (for N64 games)”, as anything but OEM is simply inferior for nearly any N64 game with high analog precision requisites

It would be super cool if Nintendo wanted to sell peripherals rather than collectibles

I got one of the new Scuf Instinct Professionals to try.

It’s interesting because under the hood it is straight-up an OEM X|S controller but with

  • new paddles that can be hit with your middle finger laterally (two per finger, left/right, tactile switch)
  • hair trigger setting that actually feels exactly like a mouse click (not sure how they’re doing this, might tear it down to find out)
  • magnetic faceplate to get at sticks for swapping shapes rather than magnetic sticks/dpad
  • AAs rather than internal rechargeable (The Right Thing To Do as far as I’m concerned)

It’s objectively too much money but curious as an officially licensed alternate Elite controller

Do these suck? I was just given this X-Arcade stick. May be decent as is or a good brook adapter with new sticks/buttons candidate.

they’ve always had a bad reputation among stickheads but I really liked mine in 2003

thought it was really cool that they made adapters so you could plug it into Gamecube/Dreamcast/PC/PS2

Any stick is good when a stick is called for.
If I recall right they are are real easy to swap parts into.

If you wanna fancy it up order some cool patterned vinyl wrap, take all the buttons and stick out, apply wrap, razor the holes and edges out and put the parts back in. KaBam custom stick.

they are…fine? Like definitely good for free, and a lot of folks didn’t like them because they go for the US arcade style buttons/stick, but those can probably be swapped. Crack it open and see.

i wouldn’t invest any money into improving it, but I wouldn’t turn one down for free if storage space was available. good to have around for that USA Feel, and with a big ole trackball to boot.

 Yeah. I’m pushing it here.

I grew up playing games in the arcade in the 80s and 90s so yeah it feels super nostalgic.

Gonna blaspheme ITT and say I honestly prefer the feel of bat-top arcade sticks

gonna say it’s the opposite situation. the compnents are good if you like US arcade stuff but the usb adapter could stand to be replaced with something like from an xbox controller

would you recommend this or the elite series 2?

The Instinct is a better controller but it costs too much vis-a-vis the Series 2. The Series 2 is available on sale now for ~$130.

If the niceties of a case, dock, rechargeable battery, metal magnetic attachments, etc. are important, Series 2. The Instinct is all plastic, albeit nice plastic.

I think the paddles and hair triggers are hands-down better on the Instinct Pro than the Series 2 and they’re the most important aspect.

I can’t speak to the durability of the Instinct beyond the build quality being nice, but I know of many people who have had issues with their Series 2.

Bottom line I suppose I would not recommend a Series 2 given the durability but I would recommend an Instinct (Pro) if you can stomach the cost. It gets the fundamentals of a “pro” controller better than any yet.

(The Instinct has paddles and the Instinct Pro adds the mouse click hair triggers. They’re worth it if you play shooters, skip otherwise.)

What’s the D-Pad like? Is it literally the one from stock Series X/S controllers? (Which I’ve concluded is better than the Elite 2 dpad, as I mentioned earlier.)

The underlying assembly is the same but they give interchangeable options of the “dish” or a more traditional cross. It attaches with magnets but they’re embedded underneath the plastic and snap on to feel much more solidly attached. I never cared for the magnetic d-pad because it felt loose; not an issue here.
