they’re 18mm actually. wouldn’t mind if they were bigger tho
Gonna rescind my recommendation for the Binbok Pro Controller.
I thought I was getting old, my reflexes deteriorating before my eyes, unable to reliably catch fish in Animal Crossing or parry literally anything in Metroid.
Nope! It’s was my good friend Binbok, which I’m not sure how to test exactly, but I’m pretty sure has fairly significant input lag.
I dunno, I guess it’s still solid if you wanna use it for like, RPGs, or the “little brother/friend” busted third party controller, or games that don’t require super tight timing. But if you do, hoo boy. Maybe not this one.
(I think their joycons are still OK but now I gotta test those, too. Dang!)
I figured out the cause of Strive having all these audio glitches and lag spikes on my PC was somehow the Xbox Elite 2 I decided to use (after trying many controllers…). Still not sure what it is about the controller driver/features that leads to this but unplugging the controller definitely fixes it. I tried disabling checkboxes for all kinds of controller features I don’t need, but didn’t find the culprit that way, and the combination is too obscure for the internet to have any specific advice. At this point I could probably resort to “I’m actually a professional programmer” methods to get to the bottom of it but I no longer enjoy spending hours on debugging when I’m not paid for it.
I switched to an Xbox Series X controller for now (the bug seems very specific, it only affects the most expensive Xbox controller…). The “hybrid” D-pad on that one is actually superior for executing half-circles anyway, but it also hurts the tip of my thumb. I suppose that’s a pain issue maybe I can tolerate since that’s a tiny thing that heals easily and unlikely to lead to any long-term RSI.
because your thumb is resting on the edges? I would try cutting a piece of adhesive foam or fabric tape to make it more comfortable – can’t imagine it hurting accuracy
I did cover my vacuum handle in neoprene tape, though, so I’m admittedly a crank
Great idea, thanks! It sounds like that might work, as the problem is the surface is hard and there are edges between the cross parts and the diagonal parts.
You may even be able to find on e.g. Amazon some that are already cut into discs to save you the trouble of an xacto knife job.
I found this Series X grip tape product but it covers everything but the dpad lol. Looks like xacto time
a sweat absorbing game pad seems like a smelly idea
Usually the material is non-porous, it just has channels so the sweat/etc. doesn’t make the surface slick. I’ve used the silicone-with-channels and skateboard grip tape varieties on mice without issue.
If anyone is still using their DS4s, these little guys have dropped to $10 and are well worth it.

Beats the hell outta paying for a used Astro or a SCUF or Nacon or whatever.
Today the tip of my thumb healed enough to play Guilty Gear again, but just now I slightly burned it by touching my toaster oven so it’s back to virtually the same level of pain. Nooooooo
My partner suggested playing with a bandaid, and then I was like “maybe I should always play with a bandaid on???”. And now I’m down the rabbit hole of searching for “gamer thumb glove” products
Cots like you’d find in first aid for service workers are good in my experience albeit single use.
Outside of your situation, what’s the benefit of a gamer thumb glove? More accurate grip? I genuinely can’t imagine
They’re all marketed for mobile Fortnite and PubG. In the first place it always seemed baffling to me that anyone would want to control a camera in a fast-paced shooter on a touchscreen. I guess having more grip on your thumb makes these ports slightly less awful
Doolittle’s suggestion sounds more relevant to the problem I have, so I ordered a 20-pack of cotton finger cots
i decided to try Sayonara Wild Hearts on ipad instead of buying the switch version at 40% off and for the most part am glad i did but sliding my finger all over the touchscreen felt like i was doing something to my fascia
I would argue that a touchscreen is way better than using a controller since you’re being given an input with no theoretical max, so you can get nice fast and precise turning or flicks and you’re not limited to using your thumb if your screen is big enough (I can claw my iPad and flick with my index and have my thumb ready for virtual buttons)
it’s certainly a hell of a lot more elegant than the analog stick
In theory I’d agree but in practice the control surface is the same as the screen so I’m dragging my big dumb fingers right across what I’m trying to look at
Has anyone made a “control pad” that’s just a big touchpad?
Like the Steam controller? I also have a 6"x4" Apple trackpad and neither of them are any good for camera control.
I wouldn’t want it to be thumb-centric, I don’t think
I like to continue to have fingerprints so dragging my fingers across a rough plastic (or smooth glass) surface is absolutely awful, touch interfaces are one of the worst things we’ve been forced to accept
