Methodical / Slow Action Platformers

oh that actually looks rather pretty

how do they make the real time lighting work with pre-drawn sprites like that?

I imagine they have specular+normal maps so that they can have some benefits from 3d lighting

Yep, you can either make a 3d model and bake out some normals or paint them by hand, which will have artifacts but is sufficient for most purposes.

Haven’t played it yet but Stramonium (2022) by the same author looks like it’s probably another that fits this topic.

1 stage only but long, hard and nearly impossible to complete;

Having beaten Kid Icarus recently (don’t beat kids!!) i would like to submit it is a methodical/slow action platformer. You are punished harshly for rushing, rewarded heavily for carefully clearing out all enemies and sustaining as little damage as possible. Your attacks are limited and strength fairly weak in the early game, though you get satisfyingly powerful by the end.

Likewise i would include the first 3 Metroids, and especially the very 1st one. you get speedier and more powerful in Super but Samus still has a very particular, sort of complicated control style and meticulous play is still rewarded

Umm joke answer the Game Boy Castlevanias. methodical? sure. slow? fucking right they are
