Whoo, uh, better late than never for me but have gotten my mind blown by Grind Stormer, my new favorite Toaplan/proto-Cave shmup and the Gen port is smooth as hell, probably the reduced color palette is the only tipoff that it’s a home port of an arcade game. Looking at it in 2020 lenses it’s like a 16-bit demake of a modern shmup as forward thinking as it seemed to be for me.
you can definitely see it taking a place on an evolutionary chart like
grind stormer - batsugun - donpachi
working on some new projects now:
Sword of Vermilion
Phantasy Star II
Sword of Vermillion has one of the highest soundtrack-to-game quality ratios
That should be a thread
I feel like this is probably a nightmare combination
i gotta finish sword of vermillion, it sucked me in a couple years ago
@MintyJuffowup
i just recruited hugh and got the jet scooter in my ongoing phantasy star ii playthrough. i will never be able to think about anything except your avatar when i see hugh lol
I still haven’t gotten far enough in the game to meet him! I just really connected with that face. Are you playing the original release or a “modernized” hack?
OG all the way
follow my exploits:
i just got a zune av cable in from ebay so i’m testing out CRTPi on my raspberry pi 3b. it is working well! you can’t really overstate how a lot of genesis games used dithering so aggressively that they only really come across properly on a crt through composite video specifically. jurassic park’s title screen is absolutely stunning over composite this way, it is ridiculous! i have been playing with a retro access component cable on my actual model 2, which makes the colors really fantastic…but yeah, jeez, composite blending is such a thing on genesis, it is really wild
i will take pictures
all of this stuff looks blocky and unblended in rgb but wow it just comes alive in a different way with composite. it is legitimately special
Seeing Paprium in motion makes me a bit hype, not so much I want to drop what they ask for the 2nd run, but hoping for a (cracked?) rom or cheaper release in some other form as Pier Solar eventually got I guess. I think it’s the obnoxious digitized voices that do it for me
LOL my Paprium has been “shipping…” since Dec 15th. Opened a ticket 3 days ago.
Going to be so awesome when it finally gets here and doesn’t work on a model 1.
Go play Xeno Crisis instead.
good:
great music! lots of bold colors! unintelligible but provocative voice samples! parallax, detail, flourishes, secrets, branching paths!
bad:
some of the animations are a little anemic
why does everything strobe? massive epilepsy warning, and it seems kinda maliciously intentional
SFX sounds extremely weak
physics look weird
and of course development was headed by someone of questionable integrity (to understate it), it might destroy your console, and it costs a bizarre, again seemingly malicious amount
lol

So by “shipping” they mean not shipping. For the past month because they fucking tried to launch a game in December.
Oh @meauxdal and others. Is there a way that a genesis/megadrive game could do 16x9?
genesis could fake something like that with anamorphic widescreen or letterboxing, but the genesis only does stuff like 256x224 or 320x224, nothing natively widescreen
