What are some games you think have a strong art direction but a disappointing start menu? I keep imagining the menu for Death Stranding is way cooler than it actually is just cause the rest of that game looks so nice.
The only thing resembling a start menu that I can possibly find “disappointing” is games that make you select, like, your screen resolution in a little Windows gray window before entering the game UI proper. Feels wrong somehow.
Shadow of the Colossus is my favorite Team Ico game (I need those open spaces and quiet/dreadful in-betweens), but I think I like the story most when I leave Wanda marching inexorably towards his Doom, not to see it myself. They execute it well, but it’s impossible to live up to the foreboding they set from the getgo.
It’s myth; I already know their message just from the packaging
that was the unity standard from like 2013-2017
Me when you hand me a guitar:
SH: Origins had a nice start menu from what I remember. I used to let it sit so I could hear this:
A recent atmospheric example. Has a really nice filter change to the music once the player actually presses start around 32 seconds in.
I don’t think I saw this site posted in here earlier (if I missed it my bad) but this site has uploaded screenshots of a few hundred games’ UIs and most of them include the title screen/start menu as well.

I got a bunch of these from the gigantic bundle again so let me clear them out, warning there’s too many of them.

this one is my favorite. i haven’t played this game and now i don’t think i need to because i’ve gotten enough enjoyment from this title screen. “GERMFOOD”
I actually love that game. Recommend giving it a shot cause it carries that art style through everything.
