i promise I’m not tryna be pithy or whatever, but isn’t that also the basis for like among us (and all the werewolf/mafia games it’s pulling from)? i never liked any of those “social deduction” or “bluffing” style games for this exact reason. just kinda seems like a vector for people to be unpleasant, especially/specifically towards those who are more trusting/amiable.
The good social deduction games put an emphasis on the deduction part and not the “vector for unpleasantness” part. Without a means to deduce anything, it does become exactly what you describe
The card game Coup is still my gold standard for a well designed bluffing game whereas stuff like Diplomacy or classic Werewolf is viscerally unpleasant to me because if you’re not being an asshole all you can do is blindly guess who is being one, they barely qualify as games.
iunno i think it’s a fine choice depending on execution
yes eve also sucks now but it was good for a while
I used the word “intentionally” to provide a fig leaf of cover for games that reward antisocial play through their emergent properties, like Eve or Ultima Online. I think those are fine! They can reflect the worst qualities of players but I don’t think they force players to act like shitheads
I think bluffing games are games, and in games like Werewolf the skill is in lying convincingly or spotting when someone’s lying. they’re a couple of differences tho:
- not everyone can betray, and they win if deceivers are eliminated
- you play in person with people you know, so you can spot their tells & can retaliate for previous digressions
playing them online with randoms where everyone is a werewolf sounds crap, especially with no risk/reward payoff or reputation to lose
i think like werewolf i’d only want to play a scheme-y pvp thing with nice friends
I finally bought into blood on the clocktower earlier this year (I was not into it when it came out, felt representative of a lot of trends I didn’t like in board gaming) and took the time to learn it well enough to run a couple games and have a pretty high opinion of it now. I think the core “werewolf benefits from a good DM” thesis is solid.
I sometimes shoot up in bed at night because I didn’t heed the washwomans warning
March 5th launch now
man i wish this was single player so fucking bad dude this sucks
Maybe we can all just not buy the game that steals a bunch of art from someone and then actively tries to make her life miserable when then get found out. I dunno. Seems like an easy thing to do.
My initial plan was to ignore the game and get the art book but, uh, yeah…
this part i was unaware of - what happened?
From what I gather, lots of denials and threats of lawsuits from Sony and Bungie to shut her up, and Bungie didn’t seem to do much to stop their fans from harassing the hell out of the artist in GooberGrape-y ways. Also just ignored her claims until the internet blew up about it, then pawned it off on legal for 9 months of not saying a thing. And now are just basically pretending it didn’t happen, while the harassment continues.
no new games 2026
i think she got an undisclosed settlement? doesn’t excuse anything they did of course but it seems like there was some resolution at least.
Longtime lurker here. Had to make an account for this. Have to split it into two posts due to new account link restrictions.
The same day. Bungie publicly acknowledged this situation and reached out to them on the same day the artist spoke out.
Moreover, the art director at the time, Joseph Cross, who had been following antireal on socials, issued a statement apologizing to her the day after and is no longer working at Bungie.
Then, in December (which, to be sure, is longer than it should’ve taken), antireal posted that “The Marathon art issue has been resolved with Bungie and Sony Interactive Entertainment to my satisfaction.”
I don’t know how much the artist has been harassed over this (do you, actually?) but, from what I’ve seen, even transphobic scum where you’d most expect to find them have used this opportunity to shit on the game instead of the artist. Because, you know, it’s an extraction shooter. By Bungie. They’re handling it in just as much bad faith as this forum seems to be, and making up just as many narratives condemning it.
I’ve played the game. I think it’s awesome and I’m excited for it. I think it’s a much less evil game than Destiny ever was, and far more respectful of my time, intelligence, and skill. You do not have to sleepwalk through an idiotic 20-hour campaign and do repetitive chores for another 80 hours to earn the privilege of playing the one actually interesting and challenging part of the game (the raids). Marathon is a proper game that gives you the keys to the kingdom and trusts you to figure it out from the word go, and I’m shocked that Bungie is making it because it’s the polar opposite of Destiny in every way that matters.
I’m sorry I didn’t have something nicer to say for my first post but this thread is just demented. Just disable prox chat if ya’ll must and treat the enemies as hyper-evolved AI, while acknowledging that there hasn’t been a good AAA FPS campaign since 2016 anyway (a truly lost art), and who knows, you might have an OK time with it. Or don’t. But what the hell is this, really?
this shit is still so insane to me cos like imagine having infinite money and being able to pay anyone you like to make cool shit for your project and instead choosing to steal. fucking incomprehensible.
hottest first post since the illustrious ‘hater’. welcome, Actual G
