marathon (20XX)

Has anyone figured out how to use cheat codes in the alephone versions of Marathon? I’m at a late level in Durandal and never got my machine gun back after it got taken away, and I am in a situation where I need projectiles to flip a switch but don’t have any rocket rounds to fire with my rocket launcher, yet plenty of grenades. I’ve tried looking into this myself and the documentation is just not clear on what I need to do.

i have finished marathon infinity, the last level I spent a great deal of time just trying to find the panel to put the final uplink chips into, and wouldn’t you know it they don’t look like the panels you’d normally put uplink chips into. Lots of clever stuff happening though through the final levels. Sprawling things that I kept getting totally lost in.

I did like the motif of going into some ruins to turn on a big hulking computer that contained an AI, that’s something you do a few times in Marathon 2 and Infinity. The game starting and ending on the orbital installation (which has really cool texture and BSP designs) was also really good. I don’t know how The Marine/Cyborg/Etc is traveling through time but the idea of going into a timeline, failing, and then going back again is interesting. The mechanics of doing so (Via the Electric Sheep levels) is also pretty interesting. The dreamlike levels that follow are pretty high concept for the time (and still are). There’s one point where a window to a desert transforms into a portal to another room so they’re doing some pretty interesting stuff. I did find slogging through a lot of the maze like levels to be frustrating. I tried not to kill Bobs whenever possible, so the missions where you have to kill a bunch of them were more than a little distressing.

have also been digging into the 2 decades worth of Marathon dot org posts about story theories and the multiple branching timelines. I can’t think of another game story with more loose ends. I think the series really maximized the technical limitations at the time.

Having played all three and thinking of Marathon, The Extraction Shooter. I can’t imagine why Bungie isn’t putting the various alien races in the game, Durandal is nowhere to be found, etc. I think a lot of the themes of Marathon would work well for a game where you play as an interchangable disposable killing machine. Maybe these are planned for later seasonal reveals, but that isn’t going to get people interested. Being an extraction shooter certainly isn’t going to interest people. Maybe someone left at Bungie is going to put a few crumbs in there for the freaks that ties things loosely enough together to make some kind of sense.

Every time a site like ign does polls they ask if people would prefer the dogshit being made now or a single player game and it’s literally almost always at least 80% in favor of making a real marathon game instead with stuff you actually care about from marathon in it. I think it’s funny that bungie thought one of the only things that was important to the identity of marathon is Tau Ceti IV, which you never actually visit in any of the games (the security officer is the tenth cyborg on the Marathon, not one of the nine on the colony,) and which gets nuked down to bedrock three months after the first game if you believe Durandal in the second game.

why an extraction shooter anyway, wouldn’t marathon fans rather play a co-op shooter where you play as the undercover cyborgs on the colony for example. are you kidding me? it’s almost like people fucking loved playing halo co-op!!!

and that way you can still cash in on the nostalgia for old game

Interestingly when this game was first revealed I said pretty much this and in this very thread was told that Bungie is too stupid to make a single player campaign and extraction shooters are cool actually, this is exciting. Looks like there’s been a 180 on that as more of the game has been shown but if I am on the same side as 80% of The Gamers perhaps everyone was right to disagree with me in the first place.

I also said this when it was revealed and my coworker (who, I should note here, I like quite a lot and deeply respect the game opinions of) was like “well maybe they’ll do something interesting with the extraction shooter space, solve some of the core problems” and my response was basically “they can’t. they should make it singleplayer.”

I mean, genuinely, they could just make it a singleplayer / co-op extraction shooter. People like them! More than multiplayer ones, even! But it’s hard to sell such a game as a GaaS and would implicitly compete with Destiny 2, which Marathon takes from liberally. So.

I am curious if there’s some kind of rule of thumb in the game development sphere that it is economical to make multi-player content over single-player content, because your MP playerbase will “make the content for you”.

I just don’t get why someone would make a multiplayer game that intentionally encourages and rewards antisocial behavior
