I went to my regular place for prerelease last night and there were 16 when there is usually like 36. I hope the message that real nerds are tired of marvel is what Wizard reads.
That being said, this is a mechanically fun set and because it is so small in volume sealed is a good format. I don’t want to draft it though.
blue-black might be a viable combination for me in standard again. It’s always powerful but doesn’t always fit with my weird style preferences
What’s up with the gatekeeping in MtG?
As far as my understanding goes there are way more tournaments now than before because there’s just so much more mtg output. The big releases still draw a crowd. This one is purely capitalism but also like… you’re spending $5 for each set of cards. They’ve got money to burn to create content.
Edit: this stuff isn’t for me, but like that’s ok. Baldurs Gate definitely pulled in non-MtG folks for the hobby. Avatar probably will, too. Spider-Man by himself didn’t, but X-Men and Marvel in general? Probably
The only thing I want as an invested magic player is more opponents.
The tournament turnout has gone down cuz there are too many releases and they have been too hesitant to ban cards* and the Spider-Man set seems to be a dud but there’s a good chance pieces of it will be crapping up different formats for the next few years. I don’t think it’s all that gatekeeper-y to prefer at least some aesthetic/conceptual consistency in a game. Maybe those other sets will be better executed or draw new players but I dunno doesn’t seem too likely to me, if you’re Marvel crazy there are a million other games you can play/collect. Why anyone gonna take up a new hobby cuz there’s a Hank Pym card or whatever
*standard is absolutely dire right now, there’s like one deck that’s way superior to everything else and it’s miserable to play and it costs eight hundred fucking us dollars
“Fucking us” dollars
Sorry if saying “real nerds” sounded gate-keep-y it was not my intention. I just meant people who play who will then show their non-playing friends how to play sets that they are interested in thematically. I did talk to a co-worker who likes marvel about the new set but there is now way he is gonna play because he is pretty much just into that and it is already everywhere. Avatar though, I know some people (including the person I’m dating) who love that series and would jump at feeling some cool and apt mechanics because the fandom is underrepresented.
Final Fantasy was a great tie-in. The cards have great mechanical feel and I think it was really good, and the event engagement was high as a result from what I heard.
Yea I can see that Marvel’s “core audience” (lol what a word) might not overlap with “hardcore gambling programming game for people with expendable income” as much as Final Fantasy or Avatar.
Well, my experience is that the fandoms/players-base for all this stuff is more diverse than that. I think there is a ton of crossover between “marvel core” and “mtg freak” but event sales aren’t great for this Spiderverse thing. I don’t know if the new tie-ins will do any better.
I think maybe what I maybe didnt explain well enough is that what I think works with these tie-ins is how the mechanics relate to the spells thematically. I think when the designers of the set feel the inspiration, it comes through, and the players that I interact with or listen to take notice.
“Secret Lair” is an online store where you buy special overpriced Magic cards, right? Apparently Jim Woodring did some art for some of those.
get that bag jim you more than deserve
It was very funny seeing all these cards trickle in during a Discord chat cuz it went like THE OFFICE Secret Lair > Jim Woodring Secret Lair > Demonic Furbies Secret Lair
Really summed up the current state of this game aesthetically
Like they have at least one person at WOTC with amazing taste in cartoonists and they’re giving the right people work and that’s wonderful. I just wish I could afford these things. And that they weren’t sold in one of the worst manners possible.
Like there’s a Brian Chippendale card now! That is amazing
(I actually think the Furbys are kinda funny…
Ah shit they got me
“Pizza lands”
I mean eyeball lands
Like whaddiagoonnado
These might be my favorite part honestly
Hi nerds. I downloaded arena a few days ago, turns out I like this game. I’m just playing standard ranked with a cat deck because I could get all the cards i wanted with the free stuff they give you at the start. I assume cats are a common beginner deck, there are some cute ones and it is pretty easy to play, but i got to diamond last night so i guess it isn’t terrible. Playing this game irl seems like a nightmare with all the tokens and counters but this videogame is pretty good. I’m kinda at the point where I wanna make something else but idk what I want. I like how blue cards look but they seem really tedious to play. I think Opt is my favourite looking magic card. Are frogs good? They look nice. I am absolutely against paying money for this game ever cause I have fallen victim to that before and it fucked me. I haven’t played any other formats cause my card game experience is all yugioh so they seem a bit daunting. Idk if I’m really asking a question here but i just don’t have anyone to talk to about this game. Please talk to me. If you want to be my friend on there my name is Babyboombaby #67003
Anyway here’s the cat deck. I’m sure anyone who is not totally new can see 100 problems with it.
Sure cats, but have you heard of mice
