I had a little moment a couple of months ago where I was looking up Alanis Morissette lives.

She was a killer in her day

I was always a fan of a good cover by Company of Thieves

covering The Strokes “hard to explain” (should be time stamped for 7:47)

The only Concret Blonde song I really know is this accoustic performance of Joey they did for a Columbus radio station while I lived there and yeah, her voice is AMAZING.

Oh on the touring bands report I caught Bit Brigade on Tuesday and Anamanguchi last night.

I didn’t really know what I was getting into with Bit Brigade, but some friends were opening so I figured why not. I was prepared for the worst, but they were actually pretty fun. Watching someone play Metroid live is stressful though.

Anamanagucchi’s openers weren’t really doing it for me, and having missed everything post Endless Fantasy I wasn’t instantly on board for like half their set. Seeing a room of people yelling along to Meow is a magical thing. Extra points for when the drummer started talking about how scary Sam Neil was in Event Horizon between songs.

This lady was almost certainly at the same show I was. I am ashamed to say that I did not Get It at all, but I enjoyed doing something that I didn’t get.

I saw Neon Indian live the other day and it ruled. They mostly played stuff from their last album (Vega Intl Night School), which suits me fine. That album is really interesting – it’s a perfect italo disco pastiche with a sort of light hauntological element – warbly synths and distorted sounds ranging from slightly off to totally punch-drunk. It sounds like a memory of 80’s italian disco, and all the lyrics are about sleazy happenings in discoteques and parties. One of the songs’ lyrics are written as an “it happened to me!” style letter to a real Italian porno mag from that period!

So seeing them play this stuff live was cool and weird. There’s a bit in the song “Slumlord” where the recording suddenly turns into what sounds like a live recording at a discoteque. But we saw them perform that song and we WERE the live audience from the world of the recording!

And here’s a pretty decent recording of it:

Also, their lead dude dressed in a badass 80’s sweater and did incredible disco moves the whole time, super high energy.
