list heaven (general thread for canons, desert island games, themed favorites, polls etc)

I wanted to try to do this with the three consoles I made threads about. Are video games worth it? I’ll let these lists serve as the sole evidence for and against.

Specifically new Warhawk and not old Warhawk?

wondering if we would manage to agree on two lists:

25 sacred SB cows

and the officially curated SB hivemind ‘biggest disappointments’ list

:tarothink:

Yeah, I think old Warhawk is neat but new Warhawk, I’m not sure there’s been a multiplayer game quite like it ever. You have two levels of scale interacting beautifully, combat flight sim over large scale infantry TPS. It’s balance was somewhat off but pretty good given how powerful Warhawks were. It’s basically dead now apart from some diehard illegal servers here and there.

Other multiplayer shooters that would probably make the list on some other day include TF2 (vanilla amd early) and maybe one of the Timesplitters idk

games that were not asked for they were just in our house growing up

bless shareware

the first row were especially primordial entities

second row, by then I knew video games and wanted them (I think Ocean Soft’s 1993 Jurassic Park and Star Wars: Rebel Assault were my first video game presents) and we were eventually allowed a Game Boy. beating Myst was my first gaming triumph

shortly after the start of the bottom row, we finally got a Genesis (Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Vectorman, Frank Thomas Big Hurt Baseball) and by the end of the row had an N64 and PS1 and pretty much everything after was intentionally sought out but Descent: Freespace was pretty chill, we had a joystick (for Rebel Assault originally, that game is not chill)

i made jrpg-only list of games not included in my initial list, some of these are games i’ve started and fallen in love with or admired but haven’t played enough to warrant a place on the alltime list yet

fav places in game - does this count? … sometimes iffy on whether or not i’m taking them too far out of context, i’ve never had much of a sense for atmosphere (edit not since i was a kid, i think? idk its probably just the games i play. after searching “atmosphere” on this forum im reconsidering a little) but otherwise loose criteria. varying levels of specificity depending on how much i could be bothered to remember

  • probably a bunch of places in Yume Nikki e.g. “hell crossroads”, the red maze, the part of the white desert you get to by going through the manhole in the woods, the woods with the traffic accident corpse, etc etc but i remember the martian underground being especially memorable to me for angsty teen reasons. i used to ritualistically end play sessions by going there and then waking up.
  • The abbey in La Abadia del Crimen
  • probably a bunch of places in Tir Na Nog but esp. Tir Falamh, which felt like one of its more inexplicable details
  • Heiankyo, Cosmology of Kyoto
  • The house in Blue Ice (i guess thats technically like 30 different locations so the foyer if i had to pick one)
  • The first island in Duck Turnip
  • basically all of I’m Scared of Girls
  • basically all of Stomp Plonk. so many goofy lil guys nd little mechanical tableaus like the bit with the children throwing porridge at each other, nd a real awareness of how sound creates a sense of place
  • probably a bunch of places in Strawberry Cubes but esp. the room u teleport to after picking up a purple object
  • and lastly, the Kenneth Myers Center

Pathologic, LSD Dream Emulator, Bernband, Kings Field II JP, Riven, Thief, a Lilith thing, a Connor Sherlock thing, a Cosmo D thing etc. might go here if i get back to them, nd im sure there are lots of little moments in games im forgetting. maybe a bit of a vague list but i wanted to make it anyway. I LOVE LISTS.

*Whatever database this software is using called Heavenly Guardian “Kikikaikai”? It’s obviously a homage but I wonder if it was an official kikikaikai game at some point in prerelease? why would they put that as the name.

It’s funny whenever I get into collecting ROMs onto real hardware like this, I start out with the games that I think I will dislike, so that I can delete them and make room for the good ones later…so at least I can say that I tried the bad ones. But I slip in some good games as a treat, so I start out with a pretty eccentric lineup of games.

make sure you go to the options and switch to controller type B if you don’t have the actual mini skateboard deck the game came with

i hear the ps2 verson of assault suits valken is garbage. i haven’t played it though, so can’t verify

your inclusion of dekotora reminds me that there’s a ps2 gamethat’s essentially outrun, but in a truck

not sure if i should ask, but… how… that disc drive didn’t die a fiery death with these … DVDs…?

not dvds, but video cds! there was a boot disc that would let you play them on there
Nf4CCYX

you couldn’t fast forward or rewind and the picture quality was terrible, but it was better than nothing
