does tennis really serve (npi) as a particularly offensive example of “celebrity culture”? compared to the more mainstream american sports? tennis players are pretty humble overall. it’s pretty low-profile. soccer is far worse in this regard imo.

Oh I don’t think 8 wants to be that at all; I think it wants to depict something actually new, but its plot is constrained by the mindless rehash that came before. If the 8 team had made 7 we’d have a really interesting new trilogy instead of… whatever this crap is.

Or you can just ignore the prequels and this resolves. Jedi training is working out while a wily monk rides piggyback and teaches you in aphorisms. Not, say, swing a lightsaber around with the same kind of training drone Han Solo incidentally keeps on the Millennium Falcon 30 years later.

Star Wars folks, I know you had a bit of a drought and had to learn to love a hideous CG prequel apologia cartoon directed by a Lucas sycophant in a cowboy hat. Now you’re in a new lull. But please, take a key from Trek - sometimes things are different because they were made at different times. Extradiegetical. The Doyle perspective, or whatever the opposite of Watsonian is, I don’t know. More Wikipedia than Wookiepedia.

Or maybe Yoda, an old beurocrat from a failed goverment, is just a bored old guy fucking around with a silly kid. The Star Wars series is a lot more fun if you don’t try to make the prequel Jedi out to be totally good people (because they are 100% not), and treat Luke as just this side project who isn’t even really a Jedi as much as a guy who can Force real good sometimes. Who then later realizes like “nah, fuck the jedi council” until Disney decides he’s not allowed to do that any more.

That was fun one. I like how Mando doesn’t seem to actually give a shit about who is in power - the Imperials or the New Republic - to him they’re all just authority figures he’s gonna deal with.
His only real response to any of their questions was “Am I being detained?”. Hoping they keep having him take morally ambiguous jobs like the prison ship breakout, feels in-character for a bounty hunter.
they also have a major presence in Rebels! (like a lot of stuff on rebels, it was inspired by this unused concept art)
the mandalorian just making the rebel alliance into the new cops of the galaxy is such an extremely prescient late 2020 vision
