Let's Get Physical (game collections)

At first I wanted to make a thread called “show me some spine” or something like that, but there’s already lots of lovely spines in here and I also want to show some other stupid parts of my “video game collection”.

Spines though. I love them. And US games have the best ones, let’s be honest. PAL releases often localize the names and no one wants to spend money to redesign the spine art so often you just get a boring black on white text in a boring font. Sometimes you get that even if they don’t change the title. Surprisingly (to me) even Japanese releases look pretty pale, judging by what I’ve seen. What’s up with that? As far as spines go, US games are where it’s at. And I live in PAL land and have to suffer. Unless I happen to get my greedy fingers on some imports. Like those DS games I store in this box:

I wanna get another Ikea shelf and “properly display them” soon though. Like I do with my favorite spines, Wii U and 3DS ones. Because they all have these little logos. Sometimes I just buy the game to see what logo it has. I know. I actually wanted to just take pictures of those little squares and let you guess what game they’re from. Maybe I’ll still do that at some point.

Quick. Let’s move on. To some lesser known spines. Like these:

Some wonderful spine work! Hard to prop them up like that but worth it. Maybe. That’s pretty much all the ones I want to play. Except Warhammer. And Payload. And the Pathway to Glory sequel. But those are somewhat stupid expensive and I’d rather buy more obscure DS garbage. (It’s for science.) Didn’t really expect to be unwrapping N-Gage games and flipping through and smelling fresh N-Gage booklets in 2022 but here I am and those fuckers are sealed pretty tight, gotta admire that thick wrap. But bug, couldn’t you just play these games without buying them? Isn’t it trivially easy to pirate those? Yes of course it is.

Quick. Let’s move on. To something even more (or possibly less?) stupid that I am enjoying quite a bit lately. Pairing loose GBA with DS games. Because most GBA boxes are a fucking mess or nonexistent nowadays, I decided to actually save money. And just do this:

I am cheating a bit because I have a boxed copy of Alex Rider: Stormbreaker for the GBA. It came with some other games, I swear. The DS game is Japanese-developed though (by my personal guilty pleasure developer Altron) and I look forward to playing it. No joke. Not sure about the GBA game though. Also, this actually has a cute background:

More cheating, of course I own pristine CIB copies of all of these M²to developed Petz games. Mostly because the Motorsports Software Technical Office is responsible for my favorite GBA games. (And of course I also own pristine CIB copies of the GT Advance games. Unfortunately I can’t pair any of those, because GT-D Racing for DS never came to be. What a great shame. If I ever become a millionare (unlikely) I’ll be sure to fund a gofundme for GT Advance 3.

Some of these actually make sense, because you get something when you play the DS game with the GBA game plugged in.

They made it so they fit. Don’t blame me. It was meant to be.

I used to pair my GBA and DS games like that too.

Forgive the abominable camera quality incoming. Have been cleaning out my collection and am recording for posterity before I sell all the trash (that is, the WiiU and all its games that are on Switch now).

Does anybody else find this hilarious? I just had to buy it. I guess because demand is next to zero, the price for a sealed copy + shipping is the same as buying the game digitally. And I’ve only played the original so why not get it. It’s a deluxe edition too, with a bunch of bullshit like a jigsaw puzzle (there is no standard edition).

Here it is. A Microsoft Xbox disc containing La Mulana 1&2. I was skeptical for a while that this even existed. There are no pictures of it online. No unboxing videos. Just blurry promo pics of the outer box. It looked kind of like a digital download coupon to me. I took a little gamble buying this.

How many copies of this could possibly exist? What other games of this…production caliber(?) get pressed onto Xbox discs?? Bloodstained (the search action one) got a disc, but I think kickstarter smash hits are at a different level, like they probably sold it at Best Buy.

I still have some doubts, like maybe the xbox won’t read the disc, like those copies of Yakuza 2 from the 2010’s.

There are some…strange small-scale publishers. 17-BIT had a publisher deal to package Skulls of the Shogun and Galak-Z on a PS4 disc, ok, cool…months go by, any progress? No response. Months later, I find the disc at GameStop, were you guys going to tell us? Oh yeah, it released a month ago

Kelsey Lewin said a few months back that a lot of the console physical games getting released right now are going to be the rarest physical games released, because there are print runs of ~2,000 discs being made exclusively to be sold at Walmarts.

Damn I’m picking this up! Every NA Amazon listing is for a UK import for some reason? I’m in the UK but I prefer NA copies.

Gonna recommend these things for Switch carts. The silicone is pretty dang firm at holding the carts in place, but way more pliable than the “oh god I’m gonna snap my cart in half” plastic holders out there.

Also a lot more convenient than the ones that use black elastic bands to hold them in. Can’t see what’s on the cart with those!

Anyway, handier to have one of these than rifling through a bunch of little cases.

my sibling went thru their closet recently while moving and apparently found not only my dreamcast, but over $1000 worth of games lol

got the inkling to go to my grandparents house and dig up what was left of my snes collection that i hadn’t yet sold and found some. … . .gems…

currently of the notion that SNES emulation > cartridges so i think i may trade these in but damn

My current inclination is these things only get rarer and anytbing I sell is never gonna be acquirable for less than I sell it for.

Edit: so my point is make your peace with that if you sell.

Dreamcast prices are absurd. I’m glad I got most of what I wanted and got out.

PHYSICAL UPDATE:

Over the last few months a friend gave me their old XBone and then PS4. Bought that Rare Replay for $6 but aside from that and some up-res’d backwards compatible original XBox games, that particular brick ain’t gonna see much action. Same for the PS4 with the crucial exception of Bloodborne. Finally gonna get to play Bloodborne! An autumnal treat most likely.

Also bought the HD Zone of the Enders pack because it was cheap and the second one rules

Plus Sky Odyssey because I mistakenly thought the PS3 I took off my dad’s hands had backwards compatibility. About that…

What I’m really excited about right now is loading up my Free McBoot facilitated hard drive via network adapter with a shit tonne of killer PS2 games. I’m already tossing/giving away a bunch of DVDs and things to ease any misgivings about More Stuff in my little apartment…

After getting an Everdrive 64 last year, this is kinda my M.O. ROMs and ISOs on original hardware for CRT viewing. idk it makes me wanna play and enjoy these games more that way, ritualistic like. PS1 might be next but I’m pretty much done acquiring anything that isn’t dirt cheap til next year at least.

Also, my ex-roommate found an empty box of Grabbed by the Ghoulies while they were moving. My original copy, the disk got tossed out with a red-ringed 360.

Two cases and instruction manuals for Grabbed by the Ghoulies. I’ll probably play it again this Halloween with Bloodborne, big williamson that I am!

I mean if you are heck bent on that method you can always hack the ps3 to play ps2 discs.

Let’s fuckin goo

That involves software emulation as I understood it and perhaps unreasonably I want to rely on hardware more…but yeah maybe someday.

So stoked for all the PS2 Irem greatness

current state of things. it’s cute, it suits me, i like it!
