language learning thread (langue, 言語, Sprache, لغة، மொழி, etc)

I’ve been slacking in French lately, feel free to link fun French YouTube videos (with/without subs) I’m trying to find more content. like gaming, or politics, life hacks, etc

I’ve kept at it for a few months now and, according to the ForeverFluent app, I am within 200 words “learned” from being A2. I am kind of suspicious about whatever all that means. But my experience has been that I can definitely pick my way through bits of speech I hear while watching like El Santo movies or random signs I see and the backs of Spanish-language DVDs. I have some Donald Duck comics from Mexico in the 70s and 80s I bought off ebay for real cheap that I plan to actually read through before too long.

But I do feel like I need something else to help me figure out like basic syntax and common grammar. I know a few hundred words of Spanish but still have to think pretty hard to tell you what (one of) the word for “that” is.

intro grammar textbooks are never a bad movie, Kwiziq is also really good for taking grammar quizzes and learning material.

Thanks for sharing this! I thought I might go track down a basic grammar book. I have a textbook my partner’s father used when they were in school, but it’s definitely meant for a classroom instead of independent study. I need something I can do on my own. So I’ll give this some consideration.

lazy here too, won’t click on most updates from FR YouTube channels anymore except for these two.

As a wargamer, I also subscribe to the magazine Vaevictis and wargamer.fr.

I actually really like Kwiziq. It’s been very helpful for me and a fun supplement to Fluent Forever. I’ve exceeded the limits of the free version and now they are trying to pitch the paid version to me, and it is expensive!!!

my French had lapsed but today I’ve been listening to France Info on simpleradio. it’s nice cuz I also have the franceinfo app so I can read a news story (understanding the gist) and then hear the same story as a discussion on the radio.

One of my students, with whom I speak quite a bit of Spanish, just told me that I sound like the Mario Bros. when I speak it.

Sort of an analog life crosspost as well, but I am starting to practice verbs and needed some way to write them down so I could reference them easily.

Hmm looks like they still load for me. But maybe that’s because I have them cached.

I used to be able to see them but can’t now.

Thanks. Should be fixed now I think.

at the point of français now where i can watch native french youtube video essays with dual subtitles [1] and follow along well enough that this is now far and away the most productive language learning thing i do. i’m not really ‘working’ at it tbh it’s more like just wasting time on youtube, except now instead of watching english video essays i’m watching french ones. and i’m not going out of my way to memorize anything about the videos, rather i look up words when they catch my ear. it’s cool because i’m mostly watching these videos out of interest/timepass but the language stuff tags along with it. it’s interesting to explore a new ecosystem of content creators, for example there’s this sports youtuber i found who makes in-depth videos about financing of teams and draws comparisons between the NBA and Ligue 1, etc. cool stuff.

[1] highly recommend this firefox extension for displaying two language’s subtitles on screen simultaneously - dualsub (also on chrome maybe)

i like the sense of getting frenchified a little bit. having a foot in both spheres.

Unfortunately almost all the YouTube content in Japanese is garbage. There’s a few diamonds in the rough but most of them are trying to copy Japanese TV.

‘-one’ suffix used to form augmentatives in Italian

ragazzo (“boy”) + ‎-one → ‎ragazzone (“big boy”)
‎padre (“father”) + ‎-one → ‎padrone (“boss”)
‎bacio (“kiss”) + ‎-one → ‎bacione (“big kiss”)

squadra + -one → squadrone → squadron in English
