Labyrinth no Kanata

so, we all awed at the promo screenshots when this came out, but now there’s a translation hack and i’ve got a hacked 3ds, so let’s look at my screenshots too! so, the game starts out as a fake psuedo-8-bit mmorpg with traditional 90-degree restricted movement. soon enough, three other players join your party, and instantly start bickering/explaining the game/hitting on each other. more importantly, look at these amazing msx-esque enemy sprites

anyway, as you explore the dungeon, your party members start complaining about hearing a weird noise every now and then. eventually, you lose conciousness, and wake up in a different-looking world, where there’s a silver-haired girl talking to you, and the movement is less restricted

in this world, it seems like your party members from the online game are now voices in your head. they still bicker, as well as mock the silver haired girl, as it turns out she’s kind of an idiot?

anyway, i only played up to the first save point, then i came to make this thread, so this is all for now.

It seems like this would be really hard to play (and appreciate) for a player who doesn’t understand Japanese even with the patch, if the mysterious girl’s voice acting continues to be unsubtitled.

Also, really hard to play without headphones.

I clicked around and found another video where it looks like there were subtitles available, just not turned on by this player because ??? I don’t know ???

It seems like the MSXy part doesn’t come back and the girl is omnipresent at all times so my hype is deflated somewhat, though I’d like to be wrong

the subtitles are turned off by default, i only found the option to turn them on by accident
if you look at my screenshots, the floating white text is the girl, the text in coloured boxes is my party members. she can’t hear them, but is apparently somehow aware of their presence.

i’m playing without sound because for some reason, the sound is all messed up and corrupt in the rom i’m playing.

also, before playin it today, all i’d seen was screenshots of the girl in the garden-like area, the msx part was a total surprise to me!

:frowning:

Looks like you can fully control the camera post-MSX world? If you keep playing and there are any interesting neck-craning sights you should screenshot and share.

Yeah, I don’t think that retro style was ever a selling point for the game because I don’t recall it ever being talked about in its promotion. It was always just an rpg about saving an an anime girl stuck in a labyrinth. That looks like a neat hook though! I think the game came out around the time of that Operation Rainfall stuff and it was listed as One Of The Games We Need Localized but I don’t think anyone actually cared about it too much. I recall it having a less typical Sakuraba-style Sakuraba sounndtrack but I could be wrong.

Ico probably did it better

this stone slab thing appears every few floors, and you use it to level up. you get experience points for beating enemies, and use them to buy either hp or the other stat, which is a kind of combined attack/speed stat. these seem to be the only stats you have?

this is what the enemies look like. you can move around in real time during battles, but attacking is turn-based. it’s kind of weird. when it’s the turn of one of your guys to attack, you choose how strong the attack is, though the stronger you make it, the longer until that character’s next turn. there’s also a whole system regarding rock/paper/scissors, stored energy and healing, which means you have to pay attention to what order things happen in during battle.

after just barely making it through the first few floors, we reached the entrance to this big tower. i saved and stopped playing shortly after going inside

Guess this game turned out to be real cool! It was/is on my shortlist if I ever get a J-3DS!

Been listening to the soundtrack since release.

THX Loki.

I hella want to play this, now.

i’m getting screeshots of something else off my 3ds right now, and found a bunch more screenshots of this. they’re all from more than a month ago, so i don’t have any insight to give. also the bottom screen is pretty much always just the map, so i’m only uploading the top screen screenshots
