This specifically feels very Roger Moore era which is the least cool to bond heads, so games don’t adapt it much.
Which is weird because this has to be either Dalton or Brosnan era.

It’s after Goldeneye, the N64 game.
I remember being very excited for it. I think there is an adventure game puzzle with a cat.
I just bought a second copy of 007 about a month back since I cannot find my original and I was dying to give it a go at last. I guess this is my moment!

in super game boy mode, pokemon red changes the background color palette depending on where you are. it’s a nice little touch!
colours for pokemon’s battle sprites are all really good too.
nettou real bout special has maybe the best super game boy palettes i’ve seen. they really put across a sense of the time of day each fight takes place!
That is so gorgeous! Are you able to win any fights? I tried it felt really fast and difficult. I could probably lower the difficulty and have a better time.
the stats matter a lot too. brock’s true weakness is special type moves which do a lot of damage to onix and geodude despite the game telling you “it’s not very effective”. like, these texts telling you type advantages get misleading sometimes because depending on the stats between (equal level) pokemon, a “non-effective” move could be like half health while a “super-effective” one takes maybe 1/10th.
it’s unintuitive, but it also means every single starter are at an advantage vs brock
on normal difficulty as kim, i couldn’t win one fight, on easy as terry, i got to the last boss (then my 3ds batery ran out)
yeah i’ve been thinking more about how pikachu is effective against psychic types because of special being used for defense as well, and having a decent attack stat while most psychic types have a shit defense stat.
it’s honestly very interesting!! i think pokemon being my first proper JRPG really meant i was going to be let down by a lot of other JRPGs’ battle mechanics. they’re not, like, super complex but they require thought and preparation to be successful without a ton of grinding
If you want to test your mastery of gen 1 mechanics and jank, I highly recommend giving the Pokémon Blue Kaizo romhack a shot. Despite what the name might imply, I’ve been having a lot of fun with it.
For the first time in my life, I have beaten the elite four. I AM the Pokemon MASTER.
A few weeks ago my partner came down with Covid and in between making cups of tea, cooking etc. I isolated myself and spent 20 hours in Kanto for the first time since 1999 and let me tell you it was glorious.
This game may be my favourite 8-bit RPG. Breezy, accessible, gorgeous spritework and music. That the combat is fairly rote is beside the point, it’s all about match ups and your success is essentially pre-determined by your critter selection.
TUFF, BUFF, GONG and ??? were my all-stars. One thing I learned this time is that Hypno is an unstoppable force of nature. MVP.
Other than that, I have been playing an awful lot of GB lately. Resolved some unsolved childhood trauma by beating Super Mario Land in my very first sitting.
Also cleared the majestic Fortified Zone last night before chilling with some Golf. I have been playing Golf my entire life and only yesterday did I learn that you can add spin to the ball. Game changer.
Curiously, an English localization replacing golfers with robots–well, at least one–has happened before:
https://tcrf.net/Mecarobot_Golf
Mecarobot Golf (SNES)
interestingly, and i didn’t make this clear in my post, the robot is in the Japanese version. they’re just like, a golf training robot. as far as i know, there aren’t any graphical differences between the two
but it seems like the english translators went rogue and just started writing weird shit about the robot apocalypse and golf based on the fact that the training mode features a robot. it’s bizarre.
Timely information - The m.a.r.b.l.e is used only in the ending sequence from memory. I had and completed this game at the time
