I’ve played plenty of games, like
Ironically this started playing the MGSV humming “just to suffer” in my head I’m so sorry
Finished A. Managed to miss getting a weapon in the final area (and completely miss a weapons vendor whoops) so now I have all but that one last weapon and I think I’m already further into B than I got last time, because I haven’t let myself get too distracted.
Beat 15 Nightmares and I think I like playing as BroNier more.
I liked Ending E
Summary
Oh Hey turns out it was almost entirely about the themes I expressed earlier. Wow. I guess even if a girl has a horny character design they can stand for something and tell a compelling story wow.
I watched Jodorosky’s Dune recently so crazy man has completely absurd visuals was on my mind. And the final hurrah has all of that. But also toylogic really flexed what they could do as a modern game with giant transforming environments that can change mood and don’t need loading doors.
Really had some of the visual variety and awe that they couldn’t do in a near-no-budget game in 2010.
The game sure did waste a lot of time to see extra bits. I think at least @HOBO should sit down and watch the ending. Just imagine you wasted 10 more hours of your life to see it.
I also restarted the beginning and was once again confronted with feelings about how the game is…dealing with a sick loved one. You say you’re going to go out to get something for them. Then you stay out. You find reasons to stay away. Because once your back the pain they are feeling is real. You can’t take their sadness. Their hurt. Staying away is the only thing that works. But you care about them. Deeply. You want to be there. And yet you can’t bear to be there.
Oh my whole point because I couldn’t find information about it you do not need to do C ending to unlock E ending. You can go straight to D.
Ending E spoiler:
Also glad they did something with the name feature. It was blocked on your save in the original Nier after you erased the save. That was a neat feature.
is collecting all of the weapons a thing to unlocking a good/real ending or something?
fun fact: i never finished the original NieR; it was in that point in time where i’d buy games and never finish them. so anyway, yeah! a lot of stuff is still new to me
A and B are linear endings but in Nier Replicant ver. 1.24474481379… it straight up tells you collect all the weapons before the final boss to get endings C and D.
I believe the original made you do the same. collecting all the weapons isn’t that hard… most of them you get in the normal course of the game, or just need to purchased from vendors. only a few require side quests, and the rest of the side quests in the second half of the game pay so well you don’t need to do that many to afford buying all the weapons. especially if you do the fishing quests.
but it doesn’t matter because the side quests are all great and worth doing reeeeeeeeee
i did all the side quests in part 1 because i felt guilty about not visiting yonah enough, so please remember to experience the joy of the melon watermelon pumpkin cake as i have.
Real great shit in Ending E here, this is like “**Read The C-3PO: THE FURTHER ADVENTURES Limited Series to Learn The True Story Behind His Red Arm!!*”, this is an absolutely wretched method of telling a story, I have gone from thinking this game may have had some merits to just absolutely loathing it now, please do not talk to me about this game anymore, thanks
I really felt this in automata in that I don’t think there were any speaking roles for any men that don’t visually look barely out of puberty. I forget how much of the side quests or ancillary dialogue with regular androids was voiced but I think that’s where it would only happen. I kept hoping to find at least one character to glom onto. Just one recurring male character that looked like they could buy a beer without getting carded. It’s probably petty on my part but I felt kinda left out of all the good stuff. No one like me would be part of this story. Which I guess if fair considering how much is marketed towards my demographic.
In part 2 sidequest wrapup. Fuck sandfish and mysterious switches. Finishing sidequests is like finishing a large meal and then being told to finish 3 even larger fucking meals.
The more I play the more brother nier makes sense in how peeps be crushing on him and the change after the timeskip. He becomes world weary but chill murder man who helps people for f a m i l y.
Mermaid is kind of whatever. It rehashes the mansion section in terms of tone and gameplay (keyhunt). The best addition is that it’s the only time the party query Kaine about her shade insights. I did like that the party face a foe they cannot actually beat without the aid of the postal service
i guess you haven’t played Dragon-Dragoon/Drakengard, have you?
stay away from that, you won’t like that either.
You don’t need Ending C to get D but it is kinda funny going through all the effort to get a shitty little stamp on your save file that dissolves 5 hours later.
yeah i get this sometimes with stuff that’s not for white people but like, it’s good to sit with that feeling i think. i don’t notice it with most mainstream stuff but when something’s about the dolls i’m hooting and hollering so i guess the actual feeling we’re discussing is frustrated entitlement
alternate reply: katie dey was wearing a 9S choker at a show i saw the other year which inclines me to agree with your gendered assessment
I like to think I’m mature enough to know that not every story is for or about people like me but Nier dances around a lot of themes about inclusivity but that aren’t any key or major secondary characters in the neighborhood of my body type, build or flavor of gendered expression. It’s only really a problem for me because some friends want to run cosplay groups but there no character I feel like putting the work in for.
I’ve seen the yorha boys play and of course they all skirt the lines of physical maturity. The closest I’m probably looking for is the commander of that unit but he’s just a glorified chaperone to the tragic field trip.
I think that’s why myself-included locked on to PapaNier. Not enough games about someone older.
Though comparing English and Japanese Dubs and story clues I have no idea how old I am supposed to thini Kaine is. We had the characterization of a teenager obsessed with cursing but her Japanese voice actor pulls much older and hearing more I back a bit down on my Sukeban characterization. Like uneducated-world-weary-30something. But Nier Replicant ver. 1.24474481379… really youngs her apperance.
Something something magic shade powers.
I don’t think I’ve ever “identified with” a fictional character in my entire life but intellectually I understand that’s just me
it’s pretty rare that I identify with a whole character, but I definitely appreciate little novelistic asides that have something for me to grab on to, and because I tend to turn everything into its aggregate anyway I figure this is the closest I get
