I found the trick. For whatever reason on the ps4 ui shows “japanese original with English subs” but this makes it use the English CC option. If I switch it to plain English without the CC there is far less italicized words and feels better timed but they get lazy and make you read the game ui text during phone call scenes. On one hand I like having an excuse to look up focus on more of the screen but it’s also disorienting.
Finished it up. I rather like it. Would like to get the bluray for posterity. I think the writing is more than tolerable but doesn’t really rise above a western comic book level. It is mostly elevated by the sick visuals and sick music by the silent hill guy. I do enjoy most of the characters and wish there was 1 or 2 more episodes just to get a little more time with them.

They really said, ‘Let’s make a Gundam for girls’ and settled on a plot from a Harry Potter erotic fanfic, idk what to tell ya’ll. I have not seen a funnier handling of feminist themes since Wonder Egg spent 11 episodes going ‘Isn’t it fucked up the world we’ve built for young teen girls?’ and then hit us with ‘Don’t you hate it when 14 year olds use their sexy tricks to try to fuck you, their dad (u r an adult male btw) or when horrible bitch children hit you with fake sexual assault charges and the only thing that saves you from them is they fall off a roof and die like a fucking idiot, serving them right?’
I still haven’t recovered from this amazing television experience. I suppose if you spend 40 years selling a fantasy (piloting a giant robot death machine is fucking lit) that is opposed to the themes of your show (the only context in which you can pilot a giant robot death machine, war, is fucking wack), there’s no reason why you shouldn’t do the same thing for women’s rights. You’re right, Gundam, women owning other women as property IS hot, but the only context in which is can exist, a society where women’s right to make their own choices is precipitated on how good they are at fighting/how good the robot they have access to is, IS an anaphrodisiac
