i know i’m a broken record about this but let the record show that the the lain anime (boring, corny, incoherent late 90s x-files gnostic-lite technokitsch despite its brilliant animation work) was written and led by konaka while the psx game (harrowing, stark, textured, compassionate but unflinching portrayal of childhood mental illness and experience of social difference - and therapeutic transference! - probably the greatest visual/sound novel ever made despite the atrocious state of the currently existing english translation and its unvarnished technical crudeness) was written and led by yasuyuki ueda, with konaka only involved in the broad scenario.
i’m pretty ignorant of the game so thanks for the heads up!
I was clicking on random anime on Crunchyroll to kill time while I’m travelling and landed on Magia Record. An anime based on a mobile game about magical girls ended up with a sinister, off-kilter futurism that reminds me of mystical sci-fi like The Lathe of Heaven

just finished watching magic knight rayearth tv series. extras include the pilot short for international sales (they were going to change umi’s name to anemone?!), and short tv trailers from the week before the first episode aired in japan. more of this kind of thing, anime publishers~!
also i got the uk version of the br set, which also includes the oav on an additional dvd (the us version lacks this!). but that’s gotta go to the back of the line, so i’ll watch it in a few weeks probably
Anemone is Fuu, in italian for example. The idea was to localize the names based on the elemental meanings, so Hikaru was Lucy (Well, Luce in italian, still means light), Umi was Marina and Fuu was Anemone. Which is actually reasonably faithful as far as localized names go.
ok so i don’t know much about Sailor Moon but i have to assume that she was called Serena in the English dub as a riff on Selene… right? if so then mixing up the L and R in the English translation is a real power move

the canadian dub of cardcaptor sakura gave everyone except sakura, syaoran and meilin very middle class suburban north american names.
that dub has been stricken from the record though, and every release since has used the south east asia english dub, which is a pretty rare occurence. western companies don’t usually even acknowledge that those dubs exist. also, in australia, they had an english lyrics cover version of the japanese theme song. where did that come from?
speaking of australia, apparntly they showed puella magi madoka magica there as a kids show. and about a decade before that, australia and the uk showed strange dawn as a kids show. barely anyone has seen or even head of strange dawn, but lemme tell ya somethin mean gene: it’s unsuitable for children in several ways

I feel like making the present and future names match muddles an intended contrast in the character concept. It’s a running joke that Usagi is not even slightly serene, and is gonna need about 2000 years of growing up to become that way
Komi is gorgeously animated, cute, and generally a fun watch, but lord, it is becoming very clear very fast that this show does not work without a really good translation effort. Komi’s all gags about communication mishaps, and if we don’t understand how she’s fucking things up, it loses a lot.

i just finished rewatching avatar: the last airbender and i’m even more endeared to the show than i was previously. i got an enamel pin with one of the characters on it yesterday ( zuko serving tea! ) i was in the middle of watching hunter x hunter but uh some bug people showed up and started talking so i noped out. ( it’s just so stupid! wtf is going on with this show? ) the kurapika arc gave me the will to live ( in the 1999 version anyway ) so i was really expecting cool shit with 2011 but so far, even though i shouldn’t, i can’t help but compare and find '99 superior.
i also hate the greed island arc but at least they got to train? idk it was absolutely brutal on gon and everyone else and i thought it was kind of dark? ( in a way that it’s like ’ wow these kids sure are sustaining terrible physical wounds ’ kind of way ) maybe i’m getting old but i sure am sick of fighting anime.

The real Komi experience.
IMO the early Chimera Ant arc is the weakest moment of the HxH 2011 anime. Suddenly you’re introduced to like 25 really stupid looking bug people who are trying to cash pathos checks the show never wrote. It takes such a long time for it to build up the stakes of that arc. What I will say is, once it finally does build those stakes up and the plot gets set into motion, it really hits hard. Or at least, it did for me. The second half of that arc does that classic shonen thing where an entire episode’s runtime occurs over the course of 10 seconds of actual in-world time. I never thought that would ever appeal to me, but things get so intense that I got pretty into it!
Not sure whether this applies to this situation, but also “hai” and “iie” are not exact equivalents to “yes” and “no”, in a few niche situations the meaning is inverted to what an English speaker would expect. (To be honest I forget which situations lol so this would still entrap me.)
I’m not, their sub format seems very “one set of text on screen at a time please” from my experience
Crunchyroll subs are as good as they are because they had the foresight to just make a player that uses .ass
