phew

i think everyones first anime is going to be what they recommend as anime for beginners thats why its always popular stuff even if its ‘heavy’

like ninja scroll, ghost in the shell, the old devilman, vampire hunter d, eva and akira were always the animes for beginners when i was a kid because those were the ones that were easy to find. being a beginner has to do with rarity not content

yuri yuri would own if there wasnt pedophilia in every episode. like id probably watch more if i knew that gimmick would end. i guess the girl getting a nosebleed before is a warning but the children sex noises are horrible ugh

Real talk, probably any nippon animation thing from the 70s-90s would be a great beginner anime: it’s usually an adaptation or pastiche of some classic children’s lit, the animation and direction is usually brilliant, and its not horny.

Otherwise, bonobono

i think it’s totally fine to show someone evangelion if they don’t know shit about anime, but you should probably be able to gauge your friends’ tolerance for edgy cringe and horny bullshit and show 'em something else unless you know they’re predisposed for degeneracy. most anime wishes it was good as caligula but i only show that to certain people for a reason yknow lol

Do what I do and invite your normie friends to watch belladonna of sadness without saying anything about the content besides a polite “rape scene” warning.

Best way to access the realm of anime

Belladonna of Sadness is so good

I was talking to a huge weeb on lex who asked me if I liked anime and I told her I didn’t know much about anime in general but that she should really watch belladonna of sadness w an appropriate content warning ofc. she said she’d watch it and never messaged me back lmfao. So hard to make friends these days!!

Surprised no-one’s mentioned Ghibli for beginners. I mean, yeah, the whole notion of for beginners is silly given that it’s like saying some movies for beginners or books for beginners. Like, what do you like?

Excel Saga has always been a favourite because it defines poetic licence regarding the source material but it requires patience for incoherent screaming (especially the dub).

ghibli movies are all fuckin long though.

but if the person in question likes videogames, then laputa or castle of cagliostro could be good choices, because they can spot all the stuff that was used by videogames in the 80s and 90s

Studio Ghibli is good for people less acquainted with anime but only if you hammer home that it was founded by two guys and isn’t all Miyazaki Movies

no shade on Miyazaki but i hate the way he overshadows Takahata in the popular consciousness. Only Yesterday is my favorite Ghibli movie and it’s tragically underrated

Only Yesterday is my favourite! Are you me? :open_mouth:

I need to watch Only Yesterday again and figure out if it’s my favorite Takahata. I adored it when I saw it, but Kaguya might be my favorite.

Mononoke might be my favorite Ghibli period. Have a great deal of fondness for Whisper of the Heart as well.

i spent like 3 hours the other day trying to work out what excel saga was, i watched a lot of it when i was 12, but it’s really hard to try and describe it to google 16 years later.

Whisper of the Heart is my fav Ghibli by a long way. Ocean Waves is also cool and like an hour long if the length is an issue.

Excel Saga was another early series for me (saw it when I was like 20) and I’ve been meaning to go back and watch it again because I knew almost nothing about the anime/manga genres it was riffing on at the time and in a lot of ways it was my guide to understanding these genres in the first place.

I remember really liking Trigun as a teen but never see anyone taking about it and so presume it is considered trash by the modern animarchy. I can’t remember how horny it was. Less horny than Eva probably?

Honestly I’ve never seen any film capture that weird distorted disconnect between adult and childhood in such a rich way better than Only Yesterday does. I really need to go back and check it out. I haven’t seen any of the newer Ghiblis since Ponyo.

I’ve been rewatching Excel recently and am surprised at how well it holds up despite the nature of its references. The dub has pretty decent comedic timing and just surreal non-sequitur jokes for the sake of it. Definitely takes a while to get going though, the pilot in particular asks a lot of the audience.

I don’t think anyone hates Trigun. I do know there were a couple lecherous ‘jokes’ in it that made me a little uncomfortable now but they were pretty few and far between, and because anime fandom is anime fandom probably wouldn’t be a dealbreaker.

I honestly dunno, it seemed ok last time I tried rewatching it a couple years ago.

the creator of excel saga make a sonic titty doujin once
