Yeah, basically. Most TV animation will tend to be on 2s, at best, so the animation updates every other frame. Anime is of course infamous for relying on composition more than discrete animation, so they can go for, like, two solid minutes without animating anything except the mouth of the one character shown in profile while the other stands still with their back to the camera. And then particularly now with computer compositing and whatever, you can get weird mixes of different frame-rates for different elements, all in the same shot.

In the US there are a few famous-name (usually ex-Disney or Bluth) artists (e.g., James Baxter) who just… do this animation on request, as their signature thing, and sometimes when a show has something really important they’ll call in these people and the audience all freaks out as suddenly everything gets weirdly smooth for twenty seconds before returning to normal.

anime is saved, again

There’s a really neat style going here.

So this really just started, like, today. Okay then.

That pessimistic tall girl is such an unusual yet welcome character.

UGH ITS BEAUTIFUL i keep pausing when everything turns into sketches
i love the loud hat girl :bbcool:

Didn’t you have a Luffy avatar for an age?

She looks kinda like Luffy.

nope, not me!

I mean, some 15 years ago.

i didnt know what a luffy was fifteen years ago

Fair enough.

Oh wow I don’t hate this. It looks like it understands wonder and heart.

hello friends

it’s time for another longform shitpost/essay about a show you don’t care about because you have things like “taste” and “standards”

so I looked at my holiday bonus and went “I’m going to spend money on a bunch of dumb bullshit” and anime publisher/tax code enthusiasts Sentai Filmworks were doing a holiday sale so I bought a bunch of shows instead of doing the sensible thing and streaming or stealing them. because having a physical copy of Cross Ange or AKB0048 on hand is a statement that cannot be merely made through watching.

one of the shows I grabbed was PhotoKano, a show I’ve wanted to watch since opening myself to the joys of the Greater Amagami Cinematic Universe. while this isn’t directly connected to Amagami like Seiren is (I mean, Seiren isn’t either, it’s only unofficially related, but it’s close enough), it’s pretty similar to Amagami and also shares a number of traits, the important one being Kadokawa published the game. so PhotoKano was a PSP game and the show was made for the Vita port, which should tell you what kind of content we’re going to be dealing with and-

whoops did I drop that

(Yuasa didn’t direct the show but we’ll circle around back to him, don’t you worry)

anyway, generic male protag just got a hand-me-down digital camera from dad so now he’s fucking obsessed with photography and he walks around school just randomly taking pictures (which somehow just all happen to be creepy candid shots of girls around the campus) and then he gets recruited into the Photography Club (but not the Photo Club), which is full of perverts (the members are tall guy, who takes high angle boob shots; short guy, who takes upskirt shots; club prez, who is just a highly motivated pervert; and, the best girl in the show, stealth girl, who has a cloaking device and is a total bro). so now he’s a pervert at school with a camera.

I’m going to be honest with you, the start of the show is rough. they decided to mimic Amagami in that they adapted multiple girls/routes, but instead of giving every girl 4 episodes to breathe (and then an extra ep for the stalker girl and another ep for degenerates who want to fuck their sisters), the staff decided to go through all of the “hey you’re meeting the girls and having the common stuff happen” events in the first 4 episodes and then the next 9 episodes each focused on an individual girl. which means that the pacing at the start is a slog and bounces back and forth during the routes because we have 22 minutes to cover what’s probably like, 3-5 hours of game. and I realized this after seeing the fourth episode and I thought “why the hell would you do this you madmen”.

and then I watched the routes.

oh my god the show stops (mostly) being sleazy and horny and creepy and it starts being sweet and they have fun with it (except for the little sister episode, I hope whoever okay’d that burns in Hell). every episode gets a different vibe from their storyboarders and they know that the idiots who would watch a cartoon in the middle of the night based on a game just want The Good Shit and skip to the romcom beats we all know and love except now you get them in 24 minutes instead of 24 episodes. I find myself begrudgingly giving credit to how the show was setup even if it meant that getting to the good stuff was kinda painful.

now let me yell about the girls:

childhood friend girl - she’s the main arc because she gets two episodes. her bit is fine although you find out that protag is an idiot asshole because him telling her to be more girly changed her from a tomboy to what she is in the story and I hate it. also apparently they loved each other since being kids which that seems like kind of a strange thing for you to forget guy, but thankfully NUMBER ONE BRO stealth girl gets all of the other girls to tell her to give idiot another chance.

also she uses stealth

sad camera girl - Yuasa boarded this episode and it fucking owns because not even having to be part of a coherent whole can contain his style. sad camera girl only takes photos of things and hates getting pictures taken of her but idiot protag cracks through her facade after NUMBER ONE BRO stealth girl helps out by setting them up while he’s dressed as a cat and also gets two of the photo perverts mauled by cats

stealth girl is the best girl.

anyway they’re cool now and then camera girl tells protag why she’s sad and oh my god, this flashback sequence is so good that you should probably just seek out this episode to see what fucking style looks like

tomboy sports girl - so the show exists in non-linear time because it goes back to the start of the school year where tomboy has recruited protag to practice pitching, but then the event where she jumps around a corner while running down stairs and kisses the protag by accident in midair happens later in the fall, for the first, even though it happened during the common route episodes. anyway, tomboy has liked protag since middle school but protag is a romcom protag and never noticed. also tomboy is self-conscious that she’s not ladylike (oh my god guy if you fuck up another girl I will fucking murder you) and then also protag says guys just naturally like domestic ladies (you motherfucker). tomboy then confesses by challenging protag to point out when she’s not being ladylike and oh no. they go do photos on the beach and then she starts talking about how she could pose and and some punks overhear and protag goes into hero mode and then he realizes she’s a lady and that he’s wrong to make her not a tomboy. also they get the perfect pitch. good ep but no stealth girl EXCEPT YOU FIND OUT THAT STEALTH GIRL IS ACTUALLY THE ACE COSPLAYER ALICE-SAN.

school president - so during the common route, protag catches school prez sneaking into school late, which he takes a picture of (why) and then holds it over the rules-obsessed girl (what the fuck, you’re blackmailing her). anyway, after a bunch of blackmail photo sessions, school prez is said on the roof playing hooky and he’s all like “man, that’s not how you play hooky, we’re breaking out” and then

SHE DOES IT AGAIN

anyway they hang out and have fun and you find out she was late because she helped get an old man who collapsed to a hospital and she’s sad because she had to give up diving to study because she has to become a doctor and she’s dumb. and then they go on a date and you find out she loves dolphins and then he makes her happy by promising to be with her forever and helping her come to terms with her multiple selves. it was okay.

gymnastics girl - she’s the first girl protag ever took a photo of candidly! she even helped him get permission to take photos of the gymnastics club! unfortunately, she found some dirty magazines the perverts gave protag so she’s blackmailing him. her request? eat fatty food and describe the taste. this goes on and then she goes out for the team and he watches in support but she fucks up and he tells her to finish the fight. then she’s sad and wants to go to the pool with protag’s little sister and the sister fakes being sick so he’ll go and now they’re in love, I guess. it’s whatever.

clumsy girl who also has big boobs - clumsy girl needs to attract people to her cooking club and protag helps. that’s pretty much it. I like clumsy girl because she makes burgs and serves 'em with a side of broccoli. also she’s canonically the most powerful girl in the show:

regular sad girl - regular sad girl is sad because she’s not cool like childhood friend girl and also she’ll be transferring schools. protag is just like “fuck you, we’re gonna be friends” and then finally makes her happy and then she opens up to everyone and makes her a photo album for when she leaves. then there’s a timeskip where they meet again in college and they love each other and I guess they fucked later. this had some fun pacing and shots and a neat framing device.

little sister - fuck you

watching this was actually pretty fun and it just makes me sad that the second half of Seiren will never get made and makes me excited for that Amagami fan translation that’s 8 years in the making (oh god they’re so close) so I too can live the pervert generic high school romcom life

alright, what garbage is next on my list

Trigger was founded by the Gurran Lagann team, too, and that show was loaded with furries.

Yeah, Yoshinari himself is pretty famous for having had a fake-american alt account so he could post My Little Pony fanart in peace (it didn’t work, he got recognized pretty fast).
