Japanese cartoons

This was extremely solid and entertaining with the hyper ethos of managing collateral damage and firey spirit, I just wish the char designs (+main mecha) had been a little more fresh and atypical since this kinda crystallized the entire style in ~1 hr 45 mins

It was great also Gurren Lagann safer compacted and self referential, maybe would’ve liked not falling back on that

Yesterday I watched Kenya Boy, the 1984 anime directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi.

For some reason I was expecting the low budget would mean it would play out more like a straight ordinary anime, but luckily Obayashi manages to translate his usual visual trickery into animated form with some interesting results.

There’s many scenes where they switch from full colour to this black and white sketchy crosshatching, or a low framerate white-on-black style. Some scenes will be divided up into two styles at once, so you’ll have the riverbanks and a boat that will be in full colour, while the river itself and the people swimming in it will be in the B&W sketchy style. In one scene they come to a railway, where one side is in colour and the other side is not. There’s a few times they use timelapse landscape painting as a scene transition.

It feels a bit like they knew the budget would run out, and so planned accordingly to make it more of an aesthetic choice. Although a few times it looks straight up like they ran out of budget, like in a chase scene where a couple of random tribesmen are just shown as outlines for some reason.

The plot seems like a fairly standard old fashioned adventure story for the most part, but starts getting weirder as it goes. At times it treats Africa like a magical land of mystery full of giant toads and sea monsters. The climax involves a nazi getting his face melted off by a nuclear explosion, and then the psychedelic fallout causes dinosaurs to spawn for some reason, and then a giant snake fights a T-rex. The ending has a live action man, who I think it meant to be the original author, walking amongst a Tron wireframe version of Tokyo.

a chinese propaganda outlet posted a video on twitter about the hong kong protests that apparently uses the evangelion soundtrack

I had a similar weird anime club experience in college.

My first year of college, I was in the middle of nowhere with absolutely zero social skills, desperate for human interaction, so I joined the only club I thought I could hack it at.

We watched the original Berserk in its entirety on this massive lecture-hall megascreen. The ending of that series is absolutely buck wild journey into hell where everyone is eviscerated in a super horrific fashion, then the show just ends.

Everyone just kinda silently filed out, and anime club was over after that.

a shame y’all didn’t watch the outtakes to lighten the mood since the end is so heavy

This is so much better than the dude at my college anime club who showed Shuffle! on the opening night.

I’m getting close to the end of Kill la Kill.

Man there is a lot about this show I truly love - Mako and her family are a complete joy, and anime humor done perfectly. I usually actually laugh at most scenes with them in it. There’s one recently where everyone in the family was given free tuxedos, because the leader of the corporation was visiting, and the son immediately pawns it for money and instead just paints a tuxedo onto his body for the event. The dad is just “SONNOFA why didn’t I think of thatttt!!!”

Obviously the episode with Mako creating an official club and her family being endlessly “promoted” up to better and better living conditions was the best of the entire show. I loved the concept, I loved how they handled everyone, I loved how fucking dumb and dull her family can be, while also being loving and kind, and holy fuck was the battle at the end wonderful.

I like how off-the-rails the show has gone, and how unafraid it is to dive into pure cartoon for fun. Animation goofs will result in plot progression all the time, and it’s great.

Satsuki is probably one of my favorite characters due to her voice acting being so fucking good. She’s always making these valiant, overconfident proclamations and denouncements that are delightful to watch. The fact that she can back it all up is a nice change, too.

All that said, really realllly don’t like some of the horniess. Ragyo, the mom, is just like, ugh. Weird incesty scenes of her feeling up her daughter. Lots of time taken out from action scenes to focus on the main character’s ass, etc. I know the whole show is built around this, it just like, it’s so goofy most of the time, then they dovetail into softcore porn and it just makes me wince.

Almost loved this, but, can’t bring myself to completely embrace it.

Not to say you couldn’t remove those scenes and have the same/a better story but the incest-torture are played to be uncomfortable and upsetting. They broadcast one of the last episodes this week and it was fun but definitely mixed on KLK overbearing sexuality. It tries to do something with the culture of Japanese sexuality.

Unrelated related I think about the big manga magazines for 15 year old boys will have a 15 year old girl in her underwear cooter to the camera. Is that okay absolutely not. But not sure how you start rolling back that hideous pedophile machine.

Bov sure the “pornography” is gone from 7-11 but not the 15 year old bikini manga or the yakuza-tabloid magazines that also have pornography in them. If anything the extra space makes them more promonient.

I believe in the power of Christian shame

if you haven’t already watch the movie, because it does expand on a few scenes and turns guld’s death into the hardest fucking way to go out in a jet fighter of all time.

i have a jp tabloid magazine (because it had some stuff about sukeban in it) and can confirm it is the seediest object i own

this might be a hot take but i dont think the olympics really pushes back on pedophilia, especially with all the reports of rampant orgies in the olympic village… and uh a lot of those athletes are underage

the way people obsess over female gymnasts and ice skaters bodies weirds me out too

i mean i hvae a million reasons why i hate the olympics but yea. maybe i read not bov again and they were making a joke where thats the point! my reading comprehension rules!

promare was only showing at fucking 1130 in the morning so im just gonna have to wait hmph
