Japanese arcades are dying

I’m deeply disappointed to report that they replaced the awesome retro arcade in the DECKS shopping mall on Odaiba with a kitschy “retro museum” where you can do things like look at a reproduction of a classroom from the 1960s.

The awesome Zarigani in Shinsekai, Osaka succumbed to an electrical fire a few months ago.

Mikado closed their “Natsuge Game Museum” in Takadanobaba, which had some extremely rare and interesting games to play.

What’s left for Japanese retro arcades?

A selection of ones that are still standing at time of posting:

Mikado - Takadanobaba, Tokyo

Mikado - Ikebukuro, Tokyo

Retro G - Gigo #3 6F, Akihabara, Tokyo

HEY (Hirose Entertainment Yard) - Akihabara, Tokyo

Kasuga Gorakujo - Umeda, Osaka

There’s definitely more still around, but this is just a small selection.

Eventually, all the arcades in Japan are going to be just buildings full of crane games and gachapon machines. That’s what as of now most of them are. There’s a small spattering of racing and rhythm games (Mario Kart Arcade Grand Prix DX and Taiko no Tatsujin are still ubiquitous), but in any given arcade about 80% of the floor space is just crane games, medal games and gacha.

If you were thinking about coming Japan to play arcade games, you need to do it NOW, or else it’s all going to be gone.

When I was in Japan 10 years ago the arcades were already mostly buildings full of crane games and gachapon machines.

The exceptions were nice.

There was a smokey arcade in Funabashi where people would go to chain smoke and play Tekken 7 and a salaryman would come in to play the batsugun machine in the corner.

It closed down.

Warehouse Kawasaki was a cool Kowloon Walled city themed arcade where I played Street Fighter 1.

It closed down.

I’m glad the Takadanobaba Mikado is still open. It was my favorite arcade.

mikado did the sensible transition to crowd-funded community hub long enough ago now that i think they’re likely to keep on trucking for ages yet, probably absorbing homeless nerds from all the game centres that have shut

cube in Koenji is a proper basement crusto that was still doing its shit earlier this year

Man I’ve been wanting to go for 20 years and the arcade situation keeps looking more and more dire

Tekken always launched in arcades first and Namco won’t release T8 in arcades. Probably none of the operators are in a position to pay what it takes for high-end hardware anymore.

On the other hand I can’t imagine Virtua Fighter 6 not having an arcade release so maybe that’ll help

Some people who haven’t been to Japan may be wondering what’s in a “typical” arcade.

Almost every arcade is guaranteed to have

  • hundreds of crane games
  • Taiko no Tatsujin
  • Mario Kart Arcade Grand Prix DX
  • “Medal game” coin pusher games

Common but not everywhere

  • Maimai
  • DDR
  • Chunithum
  • Ongeki
  • Dance Rush Stardom
  • Beatmania
  • House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn
  • Luigi’s Mansion

Rare but exists

  • Tekken
  • Street Fighter 6
  • Network connected cabs with an assortment of older HD fighting games
  • Jubeat
  • Groove Coaster
  • Sonic Blast Heroes

Rare as hen’s teeth

  • Anything retro
  • Any games with mechanical parts

Long story short, this is a reservation style private arcade place in Osaka, you can choose different arcade boards to play which he own.

Visited Mars in Yokohama during business trip last week.

Pros:

  • The shop owner is super active
  • Many music game machine at 2nd floor
  • You can play during 8 AM to 1 AM, long as heck
  • With a smoking allow floor, it’s rare in here
  • Very loud noise and retro vibe

Cons:

  • It located at Isezaki-Chojamachi, it’s not very safe for non-Japanese speaker or non-male tourist at night if you’re in trouble
  • Very strong aura of middle-aged desperate Japanese men at 3rd floor
  • Some of machines are 3000 in 1 Multicade Arcade emulator not raw arcade

The special version of Brave Fire Fighters is still at Kyoto City Disaster Prevention Center.

A modified version of “Brave Firefighters” was produced by SEGA and donated to the Kyoto City Disaster Prevention Center. This version of the game has a different scenario and opening movie, Japanese subtitles, shortened stages, and no time limit.
