It's The Year Of The Super Famicom (2024)

I mean, 94-95 me had like next to no experience with mouse gaming beyond Mario Paint and Civ so it’s not like he had any real comparison point beyond “huh, neat”.

TBF I only hunkered down and played the game seriously a single time (due to no saves, limited lives/continues) and I am 90% sure that was done only with the controller, so figured it out eventually.

even with a complete guide from a contemporary VG magazine back then it was hard work getting through it, because of the dino attack powerpoint Slide-Deck action gameplay, and i was 15 or 16 by the time i managed to clear it and be done with it once and for all.

Loved the moody OST in the labs tho, that remains the best memory of that beast of a game

I actually had to call my dad’s cop friend on the phone to figure out how to get past a late game part when I was missing a keycard or something, was payback for using either Nintendo Power or a Player’s guide to talk him through the final labyrinth in Legend of Zelda years earlier >_>

Is this a Faxanadu/Ys III-like?

I’ve only played faxanadu

it’s got side scrolling action 2d combat in towns and dungeons and then first person 3d world exploration

Not at all except that it is an action RPG

It’s actually belt scroll style 2d action. Spiritual sequel to Drakkhen which was a straight party based RPG (and also extremely weird)

Dragon View is one of the best games on the SNES that no one ever talks about

You should totally play Ys III, but not the SNES version. The music is so much better on the Megadrive.

Also this Dragon View game definitely has some Ys III in it (the up stab with the sword made me laugh, but the general presentation definitely), but it rules separate of that.

…until you see the parallax scrolling…

The EXP scaling in Dragon View is hilarious. You need 8 exp to get level 2. You need 124 to get Level 5.

This Dragon View is pretty good. Guess I’m off to the Fire Cave next time.

Also something definitely Ys about this game: being the right level makes a huge difference for bosses, jeez.
