Indie Games take the bus to Threadville

Heya! This will be a thread of my thoughts on basically just a bunch of random indie games I find online. Most of them will probably be from Itch.io (love that site) but I also find some neat little time-capsules from Wayback Machine archives of old sites on occasion so there will likely be a few of those thrown in as well.

Will probably focus on “weird” games cause those are my favorite type =)

Feel free to chime in and recommend some odd little games you’ve found that you think I should play!

GAME #1: Quest for Fantasy Illusion Quest

This is a game I found a while back on an archive of Neil Cicierega’s old website. It was made in Adventure Game Studio, I believe.

Big fan of the fake perspective on the title screen here.

Love the character options here. I think George is my favorite, he vaguely reminds me of the dinosaur on the album cover for Dinosaurchestra.

The character select screen music is jammin’, too! I appreciate how the characters all dance around.

Quite the “epic” setup. Intriguing, if a bit hard to read.

At the general store I decided to just buy everything. I may have just placed Doodle in tremendous debt, but hey, at least that’s better than if I really needed that X files tape and didn’t have it!

image
Oh hey, I won! I’m glad I bought all those items, since that appears to be this game’s entire battle system. “Click on items until one hurts the other guy” seems to be its main strategy. The game may be quite limited and short, but it was still quite the enjoyable little experience.

GAME #2: Satan Quest

This is yet another old Adventure Game Studio Neil Cicierega game, cause I had it on my computer already and hey, who doesn’t love a good sequel?

The read-me is quite entertaining. Also hey, Sam & Max mention!

Immediately the presentation of this one is quite impressive! I’m not sure if these sprites are completely original or edited stock sprites, but either way they’re quite charming.

Seems like the guy who summoned us is named Robert.
image
Ok so, it seems Robert will give us his soul if we kill his boss. I assume that will be the main objective of the game lol
image
Actually wait a minute… what if I just…
image
Oh.
image
Yeah, I guess that makes sense.
image
Will do :salute:

ALRIGHTY! Time for round 2, the good ending!
image
Ok so we get some broken glass and use it to open this address book, so we can find the boss’s apartment. Pretty standard point and click stuff so far.

image

Oh. That’s. Uh. Not what I was expecting… (Suicide tw for the above image, albeit in a cartoony art style)
image
Ok so Satan is chased by the cops after exiting the apartment and then enters a church by mistake, burning (?) him somewhat. He then goes back to Robert, takes his soul, and reenters Hell.

What a… touching moment???

I sure do, Satan Quest. Welp, that’s the game! Still short but much more fleshed out than Quest for Fantasy Illusion Quest. An odd, yet incredibly fun little game! It was indeed quite entertaining to “raise a little Hell” as the game put it.
