There was an ice cream truck I’d occasionally see/hear that would blare some hyper-frantic tropical MIDI and the Harvest Moon: Back to Nature Summer theme always reminded me of that:
Those kinds of ice cream songs always put me on edge, though.
It’s sort of off-topic, but parts of this remind me strongly of this recording
which was part of my Halloween costume in 2011. It’s some sort of “Christmas chimes and bells”-type album my friend Zachary had which we played with his variable-speed record player while dialing the speed and volume knobs up and down, while I was visiting him at Bennington College. I went as “colorful visual noise” there a few days later by buying a bunch of clothes from the $1 discount rack at the local K-Mart and cutting them into strips and tying them all over my body, then stuffing my phone into the fabric somewhere playing this continuously. Whenever it got quiet people would be like “…what is that sound?…” and I would stare into the distance and slowly rock back and forth in time with the music waving my arms around, to try to convey the effect of a cloud of multicolored static. I had a great time that night so it’s pleasant to be reminded of.
Ding ding ding we have a winner!! If we ever meet in person I’ll give you an ice cream bar. Now is the time for me to confess that Bubble Bobble is actually maybe the first game I think of on this topic just like you apparently, but I was having a lot of fun with my theme of like “Menu BGM 7” from Sega Pico games and long-forgotten arcade games you might have encountered on Coney Island in 1983 and so on. So, as a kind of experiment, I decided to wait and see if someone else would mention Bubble Bobble, which you did promptly. I’m glad to know I’m not alone.
EDIT: Something I forgot to even mention is that Kick Start Wheelie King is also a Taito game, one that predates Bubble Bobble by a couple years. Apparently the composer of its music is unknown, but you have to wonder if it might just have been Tadashi Kimijima, or at least someone who influenced him. There’s no official signs of him working at Taito before 1985 apparently, but it seems hard to be sure. If it was him, I think he deserves to be called the “Ice Cream Truck Maestro”.
Okay I went and fetched another fresh batch. These are all from Konami arcade and MSX games.
Shuriken Boy (しゅりけんボーイ) – How to Play
Pippols – Go Pippols (Low)
Circus Charlie – Jump Through the Wheel of Fire ~ Get on the Bend
Game Master 2 – Hockey - BGM
Fisher Penta (つりっ子ペン太) – Title BGM
Yeah, I like that aspect of it too—all the comments like “NES ice cream truck?”, “Sounds like a game setup box sound”, “Are those twin ap 15t horns?” etc. I’m glad everyone there is having fun.
On a lighter note, Fisher Penta is extremely cute, as it turns out.
Also, while I’m at it, Lily and I checked out this playthrough of The Amazing Adventures of Mr. F. Lea the other day and were rather astonished (in more than one way). Regardless of whatever else you might say about it I think it’s kind of incredible for 1982. (Lily warns that the video is highly blinky.)
If you’re thinking of Penta, he goes all the way back to Antarctic Adventure in 1983. He was kind of Konami’s mascot back then and appears in a huge number of their games through the '80s and early '90s. A fun random fact about him is that if you have Gradius II for MSX and put Penguin Adventure in the second cartridge slot, you can play as Penta instead of the Vic Viper, and the powerups become fish.
