I downloaded all these cars, now I want to take them on the road. (Handheld Consoles for Emulation)

If I ever get another one of these things, it’ll be one of the Thors so I can do some DS/3DS.

I just hate setting up Android emulation and front ends so much. It’s probably not gonna happen!!

yeah, setting up is a pain (though setting the rp5 up in 2024 was much easier than the rp2 in 2020, and the frontend i got was pretty easy, really, and thinking about setting up (along with the tariff issues) has talked me out of getting an rp6.

instead, i spent saturday evening finally setting up dolphin properly for simulated wiimote input (annoying, but now seems to be working) and fixing whatever broke with cemu.

… and then just played more balatro once i got super mario galaxy 2 working right lol.

i’ll probably be tempted by the next gen of retroids, if/when they come, especially if ps3 emulation gets more complete.

i ultimately like the android inteface pretty well. i also picked up a clamshell ambernic thing last year that i thought i’d travel with more often when i didn’t want to take the rp5, but its interface (linux) is clunkier, it came preloaded so wading through all the shit is more annoying. one of the important things i did in setting up the rp5 vs. the rp2 was not just dumping the complete libraries onto my systems but instead being selective about things i like playing and have been genuinely meaning to check out.

I’ve been using MuOS on most of my stuff lately, but a family friend gave back the RG35XX I gave him (I guess he didn’t like it?) and I booted it up and forgot just how good MinUI is…

I may just wipe my Cube XX and go back. I thought I’d want Retroarch and iffy Dreamcast emulation and arcade games but nah. Just gimme something clean and snappy.

If I can figure out how to pull my Dragon Warrior VII save, I’ll do it…

Oh wait no I forgot the Cube XX has the perfect screen to do 1:1 Pico 8.

I guess…I guess I’ll keep it as-is.

I think there’s a way to install Pico-8 on MinUI but it doesn’t have Wi-Fi support so no Splore.

fiddling with winlator is old hat at this point, set up gamehub lite and off to the races

I forgot about the whole Portmaster thing you can do with MuOS as well, so I wound up reinstalling it before I went too far with setting up MinUI. Seems they’ve upgraded it a bit since I first installed it, so just as well.

is there a proper version of mame for android-based devices, that’s kept up to date and doesn’t want you to seek out rom from 2003 or whatever

Welcome Back Playstation Vita

Maybe this is the one I end up getting, but just for anything newer than Playstation.

The cool thing about the cheaper lower end consoles like the Anbernics is that if you want to you can set up multiple SD cards with different OSes to play around with, since the device itself has no flash storage whatsoever.

This all said I haven’t played with anything except MuOS. I barely even touched the stock OS.

Hilariously on my RG35XXSP, the stock OS is the only one that doesn’t make the speaker make weird noises at random times.

Flying very close to the sun with that name.

Hey @AutomaticTiger remember that horrid fake vita from 2018. No reason.

Unusuable.

I don’t know if any Ambernic handheld is even capable of playing Vita games, they usually go for much weaker hardware

You could plug it into the tv though

It was so cool

The only Vita emulator out is very experimental, I don’t think this thing is going to be anything other than Vita shaped.

My RG351V broke a few years ago.

Before it broke I didn’t hold a very high opinion of it.

The OS was terrible.

It’s kind of put me off Ambernic.

Reading Rudie’s Fukubukuro kind of got me curious about these portable emulation systems again.

I’ve ordered a Miyoo Mini Plus. It should arrive in a couple of weeks.

I’m already wondering if I should have spent a little more for a Miyoo Flip V2, but the plus was cheaper and has a better OS (Onion OS). Hopefully I like it.

I’ve been very satisfied with my Miyoo Mini plus. had for about 2 years

I got a Flip 2 cheap on Ali Express so once it shows up, I will update on how it is. I’ve really liked my Anbernic RG35XXSP, so I am curious to try a different clamshell model.

My old RG351V is actually still kicking. I did an OS update on it this week and my kid uses it to play stuff.

i’ve very much enjoyed the flip 2 so far. handheld ps2 and gamecube emulation feels insanely futuristic. and the combination of being an android device and in clamshell form means installing vlc makes it the perfect little late night video player i always wished the 3ds could have been
