Man I really hope this Retroid Pocket 5 lasts me a long time. Time to kill my Chinese handheld fomo forever.
I gotta imagine it will! I sometimes kinda regret not grabbing one, but then I remember how much I hate fussing with Android, the weird status of PS2 emulation on Android, and that I have a Steam Deck…mostly that last one.
But I gotta assume there’s not gonna be a bigger leap in hardware anytime soon, right? The RP5/Flip 2 oughta be able to play the stuff it can pretty dang well at this point?
Retroid did put out a new video of the updated Mini, with its now unfucked screen. Can’t believe they opted to put a bezel over a larger screen and try to fudge the resolution with software.
glad that the latest generation of these have no buy appeal to me for indiscernible reasons, they’re really polished but maybe a little too phone adjacent ? idk
given the next console generation is looking like the bigger brands will take their swing at the switch market the window making these little guys both appealing and economically feasible beyond their domestic market seems to be narrowing
Is there a handheld gaming device that can play networked phantasy star online?
GitHub - zeroz41/pso_wine: multiplatform pso wine install. linux, android
definitely doable, tho the setup looks to be pretty fiddly and involved
probably a little easier to set up the gc port on dolphin, though blue burst servers are where the players will be at
(and ofc, PSO BB on Steam Deck)
Recently picked up an Anbernic RG35XX H and I love the thing. Been rocking MuOS since I took it out of the box.
Not handheld really, but I haven’t messed with RPi emulation in so long. Is a 3B+ sitting in my closet enough to throw together something I can bring on a trip and like reliably play 8, 16-bit consoles and CPS3 era (not Naomi obviously) arcade stuff on?
yeah
after about 18 minths of use, the dpad and buttons on my rgb30 are starting to feel squishier and squishier. tragic!
but i guess it gives me a reason to save up for a replacement that can do ps2 and gamecube
By no means let this stop you getting something new and better, but Powkiddy sells replacement button membranes if you want to fix yours first.
Oh no, hope it doesn’t get returned ![]()
I found the old SP-shaped PowKiddy I had that never really worked properly (battery had a hard time keeping a charge, and there was something else wrong with its function) and saw its battery had swollen.
Then for some reason I bought an Anbernic 34XXSP, despite being perfectly happy with my Retroid Pocket 5 and use it alot. I guess I can use it for traveling when I need something more compact or I think it’s more likely to be damaged and I care less and also don’t mind being limited to Dreamcast and ealrlier systems? Idk, man. I don’t know why it feels good to buy these dumb things.
I’m glad I’m broke because some dumb part of me really wants this thing.
I’ll tell you I abuse my SP in the bottom of my day-bag and it takes it like a champ. Seems good despite how often I’ve dropped/thrown the bag.
I’ve spent way more time configuring this thing and setting up ROMs than I’ve done actually playing games on it.
the spirit of 90s pc gaming persists
fuckin Nintendo mafia at it again
There are definitely a couple of absolute fucking doofuses (I won’t name names, but they love to talk about “Builds” and “Drives” you can buy full of ROMs) on YouTube constantly promoting these things in the most “hey man you gotta shut the fuck up” way imaginable, that I’m amazed they haven’t been hit with copyright strikes or had these things banned from Amazon yet.
Anyone else think of when Chris Kohler showed Miyamoto a psp running Super Mario Bros?
