I couldn't steal Josh Sawyers idea to rip off in the name of the rose fast enough (pentiment)

so I convinced illuminata to gimme the banned book but I forgot to learn French! did anybuddy learn what the book is?

oh I didn’t even think about this, your best guess seems likely!

The achievement is called Simple Soul, so I think you’re right

edit: I borrowed the middle french text from archive.org and compared it to a screenshot of the first page of the old french text in the game, and you’re absolutely correct

HAHAHAHAHA HE GOT ME

‘how much can i hate god without getting in trouble for saying i hate god’ is a really fun character to play in pentiment

finally played the first day of this on a call with a friend who had seen the first day with different choices, which was really nice to give meta perspective on the reactivity with different backgrounds and play styles

it is gorgeous and splendid even if i did turn on easy reading fonts and turn off quill noises. i respect its indulgences even more for the decency and confidence to give those options

joked that the occult wheel was copy protection for a PC game, feel this has got to be intentional

easily the funniest dialogue tree so far was to blurt out speculation on liability for a second-order book theft and apologize that it just came to mind, which later showed as something like “offered unsolicited legal advice… :x: …but then apologized :white_check_mark:“ and had no net persuasive effect

would like many more of this “new” wave of adventure game where the dialogue is the mechanical substance. my only misgivings are

  1. the spatial layout of the abbey has failed to correspond to the naturalistic map in my mind but i am forming an abstract mental map of the “screens” like any other adventure game. it’s trying really hard to give a sense of place but that’s a bit at odds with the presentation

  2. the player character is necessarily more authored than i’m used to from obsidian games. this comes with the territory (both historicity and limits of reactivity scope) but in another similar game i’d love to play someone other than the guy who sucks with an optional heart of gold. disco elysium and this nail that so i’d like a really different kind of player character next. i’d take a gal who sucks or someone who doesn’t suck at all, and i’d be really curious to see if a team could do this style with either a cipher a la new vegas or the always-diminishing player ego of KRZ

a total triumph i’m excited to revisit for many more nights to come

andreas does not suck!!!

right, he doesn’t have to! but there’s always a jerk option and his position strains things as a matter of course. i expect to eat crow given what tulpa’s alluded to

i think the jerk option is there for players who want to RP a jerk. obsidian games (that ive played) always give you a millllion billion different options. i feel this really hard playing kotor2 again, where its like a sliding scale of 7 conversation choices ranging from angel to devil and everything in between

steambot chronicles voice you can be the bad guy if you want

if you didnt pick rapscallion though dont worry you’re not seeing the REAL jerk options

obsidian does this all the time, their games are at their best when they make you play a partially defined character (this, kotor 2, ap, nwn2 mask of the betrayer) and give you tons of roleplaying options. i dont know why i wouldnt want to have the ability to be mean. theres many opportunities in pentiment where people, in fact, deserve to receive the mean dialogue choices

yeah fuck guy

anyway yes yes yes keep playing doolittle (and me, keep playing daphny)

I’m familiar with obsidian! I think andreas is much more defined than courier six or the pillars protagonists just as a matter of his vocation, age, sex, etc., and closer to kotor2 and alpha protocol which places the balance of writing in specificity

If we hop around characters I’ll be delighted. It’s not about roleplaying a character through dialogue so much as their position in the story for me (as good as the dialogue in this game is)

kotor 2 has perspective switching…sounds like you should play kotor 2…guess thats more evidence that kotor 2 is the best crpg of all time!!!

Act 3 is such a marvelous bit of work developing characters and theme with small scenes, observations, and barely commented on parallels. I loved this game so much. It’s really a rare joy to see such a realized vision get executed this successfully. Really proud for the whole team that worked on this.

It feels like I have only played really weak or outright bad games lately, a few long-anticipated disappointments even. But Pentiment was a total joy. Every time I would spend an hour or two with it I would walk away with something I felt excited to tell someone about. It was so good for me!!
