I couldn't steal Josh Sawyers idea to rip off in the name of the rose fast enough (pentiment)

I thought Citizen Sleeper was pretty great! Wouldn’t put it on the level of Disco Elysium but it was well worth the time.

Seriously think this is the best of the bunch by leaps and bounds, the rare game that made me feel less alone, very nice to play something that’s ~mature~ and not bogged down by any actual ties to fucking video game bullshit or geek pop culture or feeling like I was reading gags that had been sitting in someone’s Twitter drafts, very unlike other recent praised titles that I may have enjoyed a great deal but still felt like they were written by and for people not too dissimilar to me which meant it was much easier for me to nitpick and more easily spot the inspirations and go “ew, well, I wouldn’t use that slur that often, c’mon,” I have very little worthwhile to say about this other than I thought I would hate it yet I loved it, hanging out in Bavaria 5.5 out of 5

A few days after i beat this i saw an offhanded comment on a video or something where someone said that they didn’t get the purpose of a brief and nasty scene in act 3 where you can run into one of the local lords thugs who gets pissed off about poaching and foraging. That part made me start thinking about how theres so much public land landlocked by private property in the us and lo and behold today I see a nyt article about land rights and some rich guy sending pickups full of hired goons after hunters for a month for shooting an elk on public land

the purpose is so obvious, to show the destruction of the commons (which was the thematic point of Andreas’s masterpiece at the end of act 1), to remind the player how low they are on the social ladder, and to potentially mislead them about who is stalking them

is Josh Sawyer suggesting that we struggle with many of the same issues as people in medieval times…but I thought we’ve made so much Progress…

the book of hours showed up in a millennium season 3 episode and they showed the cool illustrations for a fraction of a second >:(

“it’s all pretty boring because the only thing you can do is talk”

is there anything more human than doing labor and talking. dumbass

mainstream games criticism is like nonexistent at this point lol

Josh Sawyer seems, maybe more than anybody in the entire industry, like he has a very good handle on his professional relationships and he obviously gets everything he needs from that audience to keep him going at this level but like… engagement with “public opinion” is just kaput

it’s honestly not worth reading after they said they spent 2 whole in game days harassing the old widow. like what the fuck. (act 1 spoilers) if you actually investigate her you find out theres more motives for making her disappear than her killing someone, like the church is trying to fuck her out of her land exploiting the fact that there arent any experts on Bavarian law in tassing, and Johan Bauer is a landlord freak who openly pines for her to be taken care of so he can steal her land, which is literally the only thing she has left. If you pursue that option seriously outside of like, idk, roleplaying or achievements you are a jacked up fuck freak

I could almost respect like a Joe Bob Briggsian “where are the guns and titties, this Seventh Seal shit is boring” type take, but no, she admits all the game’s strengths and then is like, but I really wish I could’ve played pipe dreams to hack a turret somewhere in there, just to break up “the pacing”. Absolute AAA whiteboard brain, beyond hope.

The intense grief and loss portrayed in joshua sawyer’s pentiment is simply not as profound as I would have liked, perhaps if caspar had thrown me a quiver of crossbow bolts while yelling andreas catch like bioshock infinite during a three stage boss battle with the miller I could have mustered a single emotion for these digital bavarians

incredible that my only criticism of the game is ‘too many minigames’ and yet this freak only wants the minigames and not the meat
