I can't believe today was a good play (Games you played today)

I play three games recently -

  • I gawk at Quantum Break’s successful melding of 2012-2015 “TV games” with gorgeous thirpsing.

  • I languish in occasional-MVP mediocrity in Destiny 2 PvP thanks to chronic degenerative autoimmune disease.

  • I start up Outer Wilds and choke up and want to cry.

quantum break really is too good for nobody to ever talk about it again

It’s got Lance Reddick in it so it’s fine by me

I am getting a lot of cross-over fun doing Zavala lines during Quantum Break cutscenes.

I’m playing dead space on my Xbox 360. It’s a hodgepodge of every survival horror video game concept popular at the time of it’s release.

I write here mostly to comment that after an hour of slogging through biohoror space zombies, my commander asks what happened to the captain, finds out the captain of the derelict ship floating crewless in space and filled with space zombies, yells “HOW” in response to learning of the captains demise.

This sums up the writing of dead space.

Deadspace contains:

  • Bio/Systemshock Vending machines and audio logs
  • Resident Evil 4 third person shooting
  • Metroid Prime’s map
  • Doom 3’s presentation (which is also half-life’s)
  • Half-Life 2’s Gravity Gun
  • Upgrade trees like everything had
  • And the stasis beam which I’m sure came from something but damned if I know what.

It’s a perfect snapshot of a moment of game design history. Summed up in one game that is completely fine and ok.

Dead Space is a horror game where undead babies are carrying ammunition

Gears 4 was like 7 quid on Windows Store and I finally had over 100gig of hard disk space to plonk it on

It is a Gears. Still absolutely profligate with its level design, it’s kind of amazing there’s about to be a Gears 5

Continuing my musings…Deadspace is emblematic of horror games that would be improved if they leaned into splatterpunk rather than scares.

Just make a really tight deliberate action game instead of acting like just aping the exact beats of every recent horror game, and really wallow in cartoon gore and explosions.

Still I’m liking it a lot so far, even if it’s hilariously by the numbers.

They kind of leaned more toward action in the sequels and it kiiinda worked better but they were entirely too predictable anyway. At this point the sound design from the original is the thing I look upon most favorably, along with the UI. There are some good setpieces though. Hard, perhaps, to recommend in 2019 but I’ll admit I became kind of invested. The snippets of worldbuilding sucked me in more than the main plots/character development.

JUST KIDDING IT WAS ONLY AN HOUR im not playing on the hardest difficulty so i dont have to worrry about complicated synergies too much.

SO NOW I HAVE IN MY FRONT ROW

hero/landschneckt: good for building party defense, they also heal the whole party when doing a special attack. has a chance to summon a clone when i do a special attack, and the clone has all my abilities. NORMALLY the clone disappears at the end of a turn but ive been putting points into a skill that gives them a chance to stick around for HUGE DAMAGE.

shogun/highlander: this fucker is all about sacrificing everything for RAW POWER. i maxed out an ability that gives me a chance to revive at the end of the turn, so they get killed all the time on purpose. its great! they can even kill themselves to heal someone else and then POOF! self-revive at the end of the turn! no sweat

AND THE BACK ROW

gunner/medic: my gunner has been focusing on binding enemies then charging elemental shots for INFLICTING LARGE WOUNDS
he had one lonely heal spell so i thought, why not another? i could also use someone with a real revive since ive been using an accessory to give different character the spell

harbinger/farmer: my harbinger inflicts everyone with debuffs for MAXIMUM DEVASTATION. they have this thing called miasma armor that makes my character stronger while its active, and i can dispell the miasma for healing and party buffs
i picked farmer subclass cuz both farmers and harbs use scythes, but it synergized really well since farmers have tons of passive abilities like restoring magic points when you walk or getting more loot from monsters. and since i dont attack much with harb anyway why not get more buffs
my harbinger has been moonlighting as a cleric with that amateur savior ring. also this is my fave character.

nightseeker/ninja: all about throwing knives everywhere that inflict status ailments for ENDLESS SUFFERING. started as my weakest char, but i got this new skill that hits 3-5 times and does WAYY more damage if the enemy has an ailment. my ninja subclass gave me a skill that makes it so i can attack from the back line without reducing damage so now theyre a FUCKING POWERHOUSE making an ahegao face

Face God and Walk Backwards Into Rooms to see monsters spawn before your eyes.

There’s that Tim game idea where you have one bullet and 99 closets to open. Will you be ready for the one monster?

How is the otherworldly horror? My vague memories are turns out the space monolith is bad and kills everyone. I don’t remember if there was a reason it killed everyone.

Ah shit doesn’t Dead Space also have A Dead Wife ®.

Ironically I thiiiiink the wife might end up one of the last humans alive at the end of the series?

Because Cthulhus happen.

I used my Nintendo voucher thing to pick up Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3.

It seems…OK? I mean, I kinda knew I was getting into a mash-y brawler, and whaddya know.

The whole “team synergy attacks” angle is still there, but seem kinda toned down from the super comic book specific stuff that was in MUA2.

Anyway I hit the point where you can switch out teammates and got overwhelmed and went to bed. I guess team composition is kinda important!

She does end up being a returning character in the series because ~trauma~ and one of the mouthpieces for the monolith to communicate with you.

It was fun to run around and take screenshots of the weirdness due to Physics and AI logic for the first two games.

My battery buddy won’t go through the open door! ):<

And as always, corpse meets door.

I’m kinda disappointed to read the plot direction of the series because it pulls the classic depressing is equally as powerful as unkowable shit that’s sad to me. Like the lovecraftian monstrosities have a clear straightforward goal.

Why not milk the weirdness and keep making shit more mysterious forever with no actual answer to any of your questions? Because that’s the good shit IMO.

god halo 5 is such a pale imitation of a bungie halo its depressing. all the new mechanics theyve added to modernize it make it feel like shit, i dont want shoulder charging or air dashing especially when it fucks with my control scheme! its not recon if half the buttons suddenly do different shit!! the forerunner enemies are a chore to fight for the same reasons the brutes in halo 2 are, they dont ever flinch and take so much damage (shooting a guy in the face with a fucking shotgun in halo should not feel like im shooting through him!!) and having a useless squad of AI partners who exist to revive you totally changes the mood. glad were fighting the covenant again despite halo 3 doing the smart thing and ending the goddamn war. master chief talks too much. also they keep making me play as some other guy who isnt the arbiter so i hate it. i dont know if this is me being a cranky old bitch or if new halo is full of shit

Halo 5 mp took me a while to adjust to but it’s my favorite in the series and it made me actually want to get really good at it, the expanded movement options make each encounter much more strategic which works great with halo’s long ttk

The campaign is absolute garbage though, agreed 100%. Soloing the campaign on legendary was not fun at all
