it’s remarkable both a) how videogamey many of the systems are and b) how long they withhold them from you at the start to acclimate you into the world and force you to just survive, so that you eventually transition away from just thinking about subsistence

it did not make this easy but I was determined to see all it had in there and I am on the damn horse

Let’s hope Fire Emblem Persona, aka Firsona Emblem, is good

I finally got to Mt Zugzwang in Dragon Quest V and this game has made me tear up like 5 times in the past 30 hours which is proof that JRPGs are truly the most touching and precious form of art

proof that JRPGs should only be made by the old at heart

I decided that, although I liked what it was doing narratively, The Talos Principle was a little too padded out for its own good so I went ahead and spoiled it for myself. I reached a secondary level hub (and there appeared to be at least one more) and I went “ugh” and the spell was broken.

i guess so. do you mean the sort of early full-3d hallmarks like untextured models and occasional conspicuous sprite billboards? more fleshed out than doom but not quite at quake yet

i’m especially thinking of attempts to break into new territory or show off new hardware/engine possibilities, without much apparent foresight as to what will have lasting value.
like, dark souls 2 really put its money down on dynamic light and shadow being the future of the dungeon-exploration experience (along with other bullet-point “upgrades” like mocap animation and liquid status effects), which ultimately never bore much fruit. one of the more subtle changes in i noticed in later versions was that they toned down the prompt of “Light the torch” to simply “Light torch”

as far as 16-bit castlevania, while i don’t know much about the internal development order or delegation, the feeling i get from SC4 is like “we’ve got all this new technical capability on our hands, and we’re not sure what to do with it”; bloodlines is “we’ve got all this technical capability, AND WE’RE LOVING IT”, and (finally?) rondo is the one that’s totally confident and in control of its medium

Beat Crackdown 3. Kinda wild that it went through all that development hell and just came out as a sorta so-so fluff experience.

Though, to be fair, it seems like a lot of that came down to the very sorta, uh, proof of concept cloud destruction stuff in the very-dead multiplayer mode.

I dunno! It was fun, I’m just not going to remember much of anything about it in a week or two.

I regret to inform you all that I am once again back on my bullshit.

(There’s some kinda bug in this area that constantly, constantly prompts a window to pop up off to the side letting you know that the Olympic Truce is ongoing in this area, don’t commit any crimes!)

are they still adding stuff to it?

They’ve released all the dlc, discovery tour mode, and a quest creator. I think it’s complete at this point, especially if they officially announce the next one this year like everyone’s expecting them to.

Yeah, both sets of paid DLC (and all of the free DLC) have been done with for a bit.

Problem is I’m like, 120+ hours into the game and still haven’t even finished all the base game content, much less any of the DLC.

It took me less than that to play through all of Origins and its DLC.

What I’m saying is - it’s too goddamn big. It’s too much game.

(That said, I absolutely gotta fuck around with all that Atlantis DLC sooner than later. The portals to the various afterlifes in Origins were so fucking rad, and I gotta imagine they went hog wild making Atlantis and Hades and all that.)

I’m at 107 hours on Odyssey and I’m still in the main game doing main quest stuff when I’m not exploring and completing locations. I’m going to go back to it when I’m done with the remaster of Liberation and try and at least finish it plus the dlc before the new one comes out.

My appetite for metroidvanias is apparently boundless, because here I am about 6 hours deep into Bloodstained, and not once did I even think of stopping.

A lot of the weapons seem kind of useless? Unless damage resistances etc are a much bigger deal than I’m realizing.

Nah it’s SotN, so there’s a lot of useless stuff.

oh its wayyyy too big, im super glad i finished everything before they started pumping out DLC (yes in like the two weeks after it came out) , but also it would have been nice to have the higher level cap when i played, since i spent half the game at level 50

Project Lunar now lets you choose cores and has a way better ux than Hackchi.
