I am Gundam (Extreme Vs. Maxi Boost ON)

Here is the good stuff up front:
English site with game guides and unit guides. Quick and easy: https://ggez.space/

A new Player’s Guide put together by some players and probably the go-to guide on the game at this point. It’s well organized and sections itself based on skill level but it’s also very thorough if you’re interested in higher level play:

Anyone else pick this up? It came out a week or two ago on PS4 and I’ve been having a lot of fun with it. If you’ve played a Gundam Vs. before, then it’s that, again. If you never dug too much into the games than I don’t know the details really mean anything to you (they certainly are above my head), but that should tell if you this might be up your alley or not. Although I will note this is more in-line with Extreme Vs. Full Boost than “Gundam Versus”, the console-only PS4 game. The latter added some new mechanics that weren’t well received and added to the overall complexity while I believe Maxi Boost ON was well received in the arcades.

If you’ve never played a Gundam Vs. game before, it’s a long running series of 2v2 competitive arena fighters. The closes analogue I can think of would be Virtual ON since your perspective and targeting are always locked onto one of your two opponents, so it’s not a game about aiming your attacks but rather timing them to hit your opponent when they’re in some sort of position that stops them from dodging it. And being 2 vs 2, it’s balanced completely around team-based play. In these early days it’s easier to find beginners online, but if you do end up playing against people who actually know what they’re doing then you will get absolutely smothered.

But even then it’s still quite different from Virtual On in design sensibilities, so if you’re interested in playing it competitively it’s kind of like learning a new genre. Many people get frustrated because you can’t easily pull in muscle memory from another game and there are a lot of techniques and concepts intrinsic to this series that you won’t already have familiarity with.

As far as PvE goes, it’s got the franchise classic arcade mode with branching paths through a tree of opponents that include regular units as well as special bosses. This can be played co-op offline and online. There’s also a Mission Mode, which probably acts as the long term single player mode where you work your way through a grid of of battles with special goals and modifiers as you unlock stat boosting equipment and level your units. So there is some non-PvP stuff in here.

There are 185 playable units from 36 different Gundam series.

Trailer showcasing all units:

You can also unlock customization like outfits for pilots and your operator, and like a hundred different HUDs. I am using the American Comics Style HUD. The includes many vocal BGMs but you can actually also import your own MP3s too, a rarity on the PS4.

Also shout out to Deets for working on the translation team. And shout outs to the developers for finally, after years of begging, adding a LAN mode so you can play 4 players without having to go online even though the pandemic has now stopped people from having gatherings.

I played the beta and really went hardcore on the PS3 entries of the series. I don’t have PSN+ but I’ll probably still get this later thanks to the LAN mode.

i probably shouldn’t get this, as i didn’t play that much of the last one i bought, but these games are cool as hell

is the netcode good (I assume no because Bandai Namco)

I haven’t had any issues with it, although I am running on fiber internet. The game makes it easy to see how your connection is with all 18 players in a lobby as well as the players you get grouped with in your match. It’s the normal 1-4 colored bars system, so 3-4 bars has always felt good to me and when match has a 2 bar connection it starts to stutter and hiccup.

I played some of the weekend betas. It feels better than the last attempt at making a game different enough to keep the good game in the arcade but I still can’t grasp how to play the “real” game.

I will unironically reenact this comic though.

That’s me except with the Nobel Gundam, which is like kaioken sailor moon.

If you just want to satisfy some curiosity I can shareplay it to you if you want.

If even one player is on wifi it will spoil the game for everyone else. Thankfully they added a wifi indicator to this one.

I really wanted this game but I can’t afford a $60 download only game that requires PS+. The weekend betas were fun even though I barely knew what I was doing. Foolishly hoping for a PC port.

I’m convinced Namco Bandai never giving PC players any EXVS ports is punishment for Rise of Incarnates’ failure.

yeah if this happens i will definitely try to learn some portion of what’s up with this fucking series

The game needs a rise of incarnates dlc pack
